Recital Music
A Tear- A beautiful and poignant lament which is ideally suited to the double bass. Originally for cello this new edition returns to the cello version [Theme & Variations] adding an extended (but optional) piano introduction and demonstrates the dark and soulful colours of the solo double bass. Long flowing phrases allow the intermediate bassist to demonstrate both musical and technical accomplishment in an accessible range of the instrument. The soulful and wistful melody transcribes beautifully for double bass allowing the instrument to display its bel canto and lyrical capabilities. A three bar section towards the end of the piece is playable as written or anocatve higher giving bassists the opportunity to play high harmonics within a beautiful and evocative melody. This is an ideal study or recital work with its supportive and pulsing accompaniment and has been one of Recital Music's bestsellers since it was published. Une Larme is also available for solo double bass and string orchestra accompaniment - please contact the publishers for further details. Composer Herbert Howells is most widely known for the church music he wrote toward the later part of his career though his secular works are undoing a much-deserved revaluation. But this work for baritone Voice Violin Cello and Organ dates from a much earlier stage of his life. Howells had suffered severe ill health in 1917 just at the time Babylon was written and had withdrawn from his first appointment at Salisbury Cathedral. It was also the time he wrote his Elegy full of loss and transience composed in memory of a friend killed in the First World War.The dramatic even operatic scale of emotion in By the Waters of Babylon brings the anguish of the piece right tothe fore. It is definitely a Howells composition underpinned by solid structure and displaying chromatic sensuousness. The words are one of the great lamentations and Howells has enhanced their effect in this mighty work.

John Denver became a star as a bright-eyed clear-voiced singer-songwriter in glasses and a cowboy hat. His love for the environment and his then wife Annie Martell inspired the romantic and wildly successful Annie’s Song which is said to have been written in ten minutes on a ski lift. Here it has been arranged for female SSA choir with piano accompaniment by Frank Metis.

Benet Casablancas was inspired by a passage of John Milton’s “Paradise Lost” and its further interpretation by the Portuguese writer Fernando Pessoa in order to name one of his key works Darkness Visible . The versatile use of the Orchestra as well as the great timbral and textural differentiation may prevail as structure to this work. Moreover the way Benet Casablancas formulates the harmonic thought and its involvement in the development of his discourse seem to be a more crucial characteristic of Darkness Visible . This work deepens into the exploration of the unfathomable mystery of the night. It is conceived as a nocturne of big proportions that goes near quiet andrarefied atmospheres but is punctually disturbed by more agitated passages suddenly illuminated by gleams of light. Sonatas Wq 71-74 BWV 1036 Violinsonaten nach den Trios Wq 143-147-Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach's works for violin and harpsichord obbligato pervade his entire compositional oeuvre. The earliest works like the Sonata in D minor still numbered BWV 1036 date back to the years of study with his father yet show already a remarkable creative will of his own. The latest work the fantasia 'C. P. E. Bachs Empfindungen' in F flat minor of 1787 is characterized by the composer's highly expressive late style. The new two-volume edition of Wiener Urtext Edition contains C. P. E. Bach's complete works for harpsichord (piano) obbligato and violin. Vol. 1 contains not only the sonatas Wq 71–74 and BWV 1036 but also the arrangements of the trios Wq143–145 for violin and harpsichord most of which are included in C. P. E. Bach's autographs as well as a – previously ignored – early version of Wq 71 which like BWV 1036 grants a rare insight into the early works of the composer. Vol. 2 contains the four major sonatas of 1763 which already fascinated Johannes Brahms. Brahms not only played them in concert together with Joseph Hellmesberger but also published two of these sonatas in 1864. This volume concludes with the two late works 'Arioso' and 'Fantasie' of 1781 and 1787 respectively. With these works C. P. E. Bach bridged the gap between the late Baroque sonatas of his father and the early classical 'Klaviersonate mit begleitender Violine' [Piano Sonata with Accompanying Violin].
