This series includes songs by composers who may be little known outside specialist circles but who have achieved something distinctive in this field. Many of these songs and some by well-known composers have long been out of print. Although several publishers now offer an authorized photocopy service the problem is often knowing of the existence of a song rather than of obtaining a copy of it. To keep costs to minimum use has in many cases been made of the original engraving (corrected where necessary) even where this may lead to a somewhat uneven result visually. The intention is to get these volumes into the hands of performers of all ages at an economic price.There is above all a simple missionary purpose: to enthuse encourage and (in the best sense) educate.

There exists already and abundant supply of original compositions and arrangements suitable for performance on large and comprehensive organs but many organists who have only a small instrument at their disposal in country churches often have some difficulty in finding short and easy voluntaries suitable for their own use and the instruction of their pupils. It is hoped that The Village Organist may supply this want so much felt by that valuable and zealous class of church-workers to whom the work is inscribed. Franz Schubert's Sonata in A minor D. 821 was originally written for piano and arpeggione an instrument of the 1820s combining features of the guitar and the cello. This instrument was in use for just a short period of time so that the composition has now become standard repertoire for cello and piano and this is the version presented here. A handwritten violin part in the hand of Anton Diabelli kept by the Bibliothèque Nationale in Paris however shows that the sonata's arpeggione part was initially arranged for violin long before the first print in 1871 introduced the well-known version for cello and piano. WienerUrtext also publishes Diabelli's arrangement for violin and piano in a separate edition. Both editions are essentially based on Schubert's autograph the cello part in principle relies on the first printed edition of 1871 the violin part is based on Diabelli's arrangement.
