Remember Bethlehem was conceived after a conversation on the works of the late story-telling songsmith Jake Thackray. Thackray's sometimes bawdy sometimes satirical and often hilarious lyrics are delivered in a lugubrious baritone and underpinned by a strong Yorkshire accent that led him to be dubbed the North Country Noel Coward. In his Remember Bethlehem heshows a more tender side and tells a story devoid of expletives and cutting social commentary of a shabby little country girl completely broken by the ardours of her journey arriving in Bethlehem as a distrusted foreigner to give birth to baby boy called Jesus. Whatstruck and moved me most about Thackray's telling of the Nativity Narrative is the way he normalizes Mary. Rather than retrospectively beatifying her - telling her story full in the knowledge of the extraordinary thing she did (as most nativity stories do) - Thackray's portrayal of her as young afraid and cold makes her achievement all the more astonishing. Indeed so out-of-the-ordinary is the gift given by this apparently ordinary girl that no one and no thing can ever forget it: Even the stony old hills […] your shaggy old trees […] the sulky old sun Remembers Bethlehem. My carol of the same name adapts a similar approach to telling Mary's story. Musically I have only thinly veiled my affection for Peter Warlock's miniature masterpiece Bethlehem Down and evidence of this can be seen not only in the choice of key triple metre and strophic setting but also in the resemblance of some of the cadential figures. A final strand of influence comes once more from Yorkshire and specifically Charlotte Brontë's novel Jane Eyre. My wife is a literature scholar and pointed out to me the parallels between Mary's plight in Thackray's story and a scene from the novel in which Jane is lost up on the moors. Through her distrust of man she feels outcast and

Max Hehemann stated once “Reger just simply happens to be complicated”. This sums up the usual and for the main part accurate assessment that is prevalent in the music world of the works of one of the most important German composers at the turn of the twentieth century. The Piano Sonatinas op. 89 are a marked exception to the Reger rule. Reger whose writing for the piano was often virtuosic and dense greatly retracted this here favouring instead a wonderful airiness and transparency. Nevertheless unlike a sonatina by Clementi for instance these four Reger Sonatinas are not easy to play (according to our levels of difficulty the easiest the Sonatina in D major [No. 2] is considered 5/6 – that is medium level of difficulty.) The famous opera by George and Ira Gershwin from the novel Porgy by DuBose Heyward. George and Ira Gershwin joined DuBose Heyward in Charleston to write the opera which had been germinating in George's imagination for several years. Porgy and Bess was George Gershwin's longest and most ambitious creation but it was not truly successful during his lifetime. Some of the songs had achieved popularity before Gershwin's death in 1937 but the work earned real approval and favor only after the 1940 Theater Guild presentation of a slightly revised version. For years it was performed more frequently in Europe where it was considered a true American opera. Arranged for viola andpiano by Alan Arnold. Nicolò Paganini numbers among the few musicians who attained fame by playing and writing for only a single instrument. His works for violin solo are unique and his appearances as virtuoso fascinated audiences from the very beginning. Yet in addition to the violin Paganini also learned to play the guitar as a child. And before travelling throughout the world he must have got to know the Genoese song “Barucaba” in his hometown of Genoa writing his op. 14 Variations for violin and guitar upon this song in 1835. We were able to engage musicologist Alberto Cantù and violinist Renato De Barbieri as editors of our Urtext edition of this chamber music work. Barbieri’s helpfulfingerings in the violin part round off the edition.
