Harmony Mass- Missa B-flat Major Hob.XXII:14 'Harmony Mass' Urtext from: Joseph Haydn Werke It is well known that Joseph Haydn wrote his late masses to the commission of his last employer Prince Nicolaus II Esterhazy. The 'Harmoniemesse' is the last of these high masses all of which probably received their first performances in celebration of the name-day of Princess Maria Josepha Hermenegild the prince's wife. The present work was given for the first time on 8 September 1802 in the Bergkirche at Eisenstadt Haydn himself conducting. Haydn entitled his work simply 'Missa'. The work has acquired the name 'Harmoniemesse' by reasonof the prominent parts given to the wind instruments ('Harmonie' being a contemporary name for a wind band); the nickname did not become established until the late nineteenth century. The Unrevealed Story of Skelte van Aysma-‘Galea et Bellum’ was commissioned by the Excelsior Schraard music society (Friesland the Netherlands). The work tells the story of a rare helmet that was discovered in a church in the Frisian village of Schettens in 2015. It uses the hymn ‘Ah how fleeting ah how insignificant’ as a leitmotif.

Rachmaninov premiered the Piano Concerto No. 3 Op. 30 in New York with the New York Symphony Orchestra led by Walter Damrosch on November 28 1909. The following January he played it with the New York Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Gustav Mahler. This a deep work which is full of virtuosic hurdles and lengthy cadenzas. Today this concerto carries the nickname of Rach 3 and has become the most popular choice among piano competition candidates wanting to perform a virtuoso display piece. This particular work is a reduction for two pianos.
