A major- Mozart composed the majority of his works for solo String Instruments and Orchestra during the years 1773–1779. Especially important are the years 1773 and 1775 which witnessed the creation of the five concertos for Violin and Orchestra as well as several single movements for the same scoring. The reasons for this flourish of activity are partly that Mozart who still occupied the post of concertmaster to the Prince-Archbishop was either obliged or inspired to provide such works for special occasions during this long period spent in Salzburg. But another reason was certainly the possibility of experimenting with all the new compositional techniques acquiredduring his third trip to Italy and his stay of several months in Vienna from July to September 1773. Christmas Fanfare is based on the traditional English Christmas tune 'The Sussex Carol' also known as 'On Christmas Night All Christians Sing'. A short piece of about 2 minutes in the style of a fanfare the tune moves betwen the various sections of the band sometimes appearing in canon. Christmas Fanfare was first performed in Naas Co. Kildare Ireland on December 20th 2007 by the Army Number One Band with the composer conducting.

The piano version of the B flat major Quintet Op. 34 prepared by Carl Maria von Weber himself will no doubt cause some surprise among clarinetists as well. To this day few people know that the composer arranged his work for clarinet and piano as soon as he heard about the success of the original scoring. Weber himself a talented pianist transposed the string quartet sound to the piano in an effortless and very idiomatic manner. In Weber's version for clarinet and piano the Quintet proves to be just as suitable for concert performance as for the rehearsing of the original chamber setting. Ulrich Leisinger's source studies show that Weber very carefully followed thepublication of the first edition in 1816. Divergences from the quintet version (EB5830) are indicated in the new edition.

Six Rhaeto-Romanic folk songs from Graubünden the largest canton of Switzerland form the basis for this splendid piece by Oliver Waespi. The composer reproduces these melodies almost verbatim and works them into a rhapsody. This piece is ideal for a concert or competition and especially allows for in depth work on band sound.
