Haydn composed the C Major Cello Concerto between 1762 and 1765 almost certainly for cellist Joseph Weigl of the Esterházy Orchestra. The complete autograph score has never been found but orchestral parts were discovered in 1961 in the Prague National Museum.

Mozart's final work the Requiem K.626 was left incomplete and it is fraught with questions and emotions: the expressive depth of its music sorrow at the great composer's early death truth and legend fragments and attempts to complete the work. Matthias Pintscher was born in Marl in North Rhine-Westphalia Germany in 1971 and studied composition with Giselher Klebe and Manfred Trojahn. Formative influences were his encounters with Hans Werner Henze who invited him to Montepulciano in 1991 and 1992 and with Helmut Lachenmann Pierre Boulez and Peter Eötvös. Awards include first prize in the Hitzacker Composition Competition (1992) the Rolf Liebermann Prize and the Opera Prize from the Körber Foundation Hamburg (1993 and 1996) the Prince Pierre de Monaco Prize (1999) Composition Prize from the Salzburg EasterFestival and the Hindemith Prize from the Schleswig Holstein Music Festival (2000). In 2002 he was awarded the Hans Werner Henze Prize (Westphalian Music Prize). Pintscher first came to international attention with the opera Thomas Chatterton at the Semper Opera Dresden (1998) and later with his second opera L'espace dernier at the Opéra National de Paris (2004). He was composer-in-residence with the Cleveland Orchestra in 2002 the following seasons at the Konzerthaus Dortmund Lucerne Festival with the Radio Symphony Orchestra Saarbrücken at the Philharmonie Cologne and at the RSO Stuttgart . From 2010 onwards Pintscher is “Artist-in-Association” at the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra since 2014 Artist-in-residence at the Danish Radio Orchestra. As a conductor Matthias Pintscher works regularly with leading orchestras and ensembles in Europe and the USA. From 2007 to 2009 he was Professor of Composition at the University of Music and Performing Arts Munich and 2010 to 2011 at the New York University. He is Music Director of the Ensemble intercontemporain and since the 2013–14 season. As of September 2014 he is Professor for composition at the Juilliard School of Music New York.

After moving to Vienna in 1975 he studied conducting with Otmar Suitner and composition with Roman Haubenstock Ramati at the Hochschule für Musik und Darstellende Kunst. In 1985 he founded the Klangforum Wien which he directed until 1992 and with which he is still associated as conductor. Commissioned by the Vienna State Opera he composed his first opera Die Blinden. Narcissus was premiered in 1994 as part of the Festival “steirischer herbst” at the Graz Opera. In 1996 hewas composer-in-residence at the Lucerne Festival. His music theatre work BEGEHREN was premiered in Graz in 2001 the opera invocation in Zürich in 2003 and the sound theatre piece FAMA in Donaueschingen in 2005. In autumn 1991 Furrer became a full professor of composition at the Hochschule für Musik und Darstellende Kunst in Graz. He has been guest professor in composition at the Hochschule für Musik und Darstellende Kunst in Frankfurt 2006–2009. In 2004 he was awarded the Music Prize of the City of Vienna and in 2005 became a member of the Academy of Arts in Berlin. He was awarded the Golden Lion at the Venice Biennale in 2006 for his work FAMA. In 2010 his music theatre WÜSTENBUCH was premiered in Basel.

A tremendous work for Solo Piano dating from 1916. This is number 10 in his set of 13 Pieces . Jean Sibelius’ 13 Morceaux Op.76 were all composed between 1911 and 1919 and form a fantastic set of pieces that contains much variation in tempo mood and character.
