Piano Reduction-The 28-year-old Jon Lord with no experience at all of writing for orchestra composed this work in only three months in the lead-up to its premiere with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra and Malcolm Arnold. A New Beginning begins with a beautiful and sensitive chorale shaping the musical ideas. Concert March-In Greek mythology Hermes was the messenger of the gods and the god of merchants. The piece starts with a powerful four-measure introduction followed by the solemn 1st theme and the heroic 2nd theme. After the gentle trio section the music increases in tension with several key changes and a dynamic grand finale concludes the piece. This is a spirited concert march with positive musical energy throughout the piece.

This concert march is written in the tradition of Mercury Arsenal Helios Jupiter Apollo Minerva and others: the rather moderate tempo lends this march by Jan Van der Roost a rather dignified and stately character.

The energetic opening bars set the bright style for this piece. Cheerful melodies and percussion interjections are the most important ingredients to set the proper atmosphere.

Junior Rock depicts two children a brother and sister who despite all their differences are both filled with the joys of life. The piece opens with a lively graceful theme depicting the light and good-natured mood that characterizes the two children playing. The music then becomes more calm and romantic in the middle passage. The piece comes to a cheerful and youthful close with the extended restatement of the earlier thematic material.
