The opus number of Beethoven’s Easy Piano Sonatas op. 49 is misleading. The pieces were written not long after the Sonatas opp. 2 and most likely – in part at least – before his Sonata op. 7. Sketches can be found in the “Kafka Miscellany” sketchbook which Beethoven used for several years both in Bonn and subsequently in Vienna until the late 1790s. The second sonata seems to be the earlier of the two. The composer also reprised the theme of the second movement Tempo di Menuetto for the Menuet in the Septet op. 20. The Duo for violin and viola was written in Rio in 1946.Villa-Lobos wrote relatively little in the early years of the Second World War. However in the happier years from 1944 to 1946 he wrote this duo a string trio and three quartets not to mention two symphonies an opera a piano concerto and a host of less foraml works of every kind. The duo was given its first performance in New York during February 1948 by Lillian and Joseph Fuchs.

This quartet lasts about nine minutes. Composed in April 1996 it is dedicated to the memory of Nicola LeFanu 's father William LeFanu (1904-1995) and Elizabeth Maconchy (1907-1994). The quartet was commissioned for the 1997 London International String Quartet Competition.
