The Requiem Mass in C Minor Cherubini’s first was commissioned for the anniversary of the execution of Louis XVI by the restored French monarchy. The Requiem was highly admired by the public and critics as well as by Mendelssohn Berlioz and Beethoven. Cherubini sets a solemn tone right from the beginning by using the lower Strings and winds only to accompany the Voices and continues to display his inventiveness with great effectiveness throughout the work. The thunder and lightning of the Dies Irae the prayerful pianissimo sections of the Agnus Dei accompanied by ostinato the complete lack of soloists are all remarkable elements of this historically importantwork.Luigi Cherubini was a composer conductor teacher administrator and music publisher who though born in Italy dominated the musical world of Paris for nearly five decades. His composing life can be divided very roughly into to phases: the operatic phase during the French Revolutionary period and the equally successful religious music phase at the beginning of the Restoration afterwards. His directorship of the Paris Conservatoire strengthened its position at the peak of musical education on the Continent.

But the Polonaises Op. 3 by the 18-year-old composer following the example of Franz Schubert and even exceeding him in harmonic boldness and tonal ingenuity already show the self-taught Schumann on the way to his own style. After volume 1 which contains the easier works composed for music teaching purposes volume 2 now contains the charming yet hardly known Ballszenen Op. 109 in addition to the two above-mentioned works. The newedition of the Wiener Urtext Edition based on the musical text of the New Schumann Complete Edition (edited by Joachim Draheim and Bernhard Appel) provides for the first time a reliable original text based on the sources especially for the 8 Polonaises which had been inadequately edited up to now. There exists already and abundant supply of original compositions and arrangements suitable for performance on large and comprehensive organs but many organists who have only a small instrument at their disposal in country churches often have some difficulty in finding short and easy voluntaries suitable for their own use and the instruction of their pupils. It is hoped that The Village Organist may supply this want so much felt by that valuable and zealous class of church-workers to whom the work is inscribed. The editors have endeavoured to bring together a collection of pieces which they trust will prove to be at once simple without being uninteresting and effective where the instrumental resources are limited.
