Philip Herbert is a British composer based in Leicester. This delightful and wistful piece started life as a dance project with choreographer Henry Oguike and was first performed in its entirety in 2013 in Leicester as part of Black History Month. This slightly abridged version gives the Oboe a singing line of great beauty. Herbert himself notes that he combines 'hypnotic and expressive melismas in the melodic line supported by the accompaniment supplied by the Piano which draws on the influence of minimalism and chordal figuration that is to be found in some of the keyboard preludes of J.S. Bach'. The E flat section in the middle provides some contrast and thedelicately ornamented ending brings the piece to a calm conclusion. The metronome mark should be carefully noted so that the piece floats and flows nicely without getting stuck and indulgent. Philip Herbert is a British composer based in Leicester. Aztec Dances was commissioned by Christopher Orton with the assistance of the BBC Performing Arts Fund. The first performance was given by Christopher Orton (recorder) and Magdalena Nasidlak (piano) at a concert in the Manchester Midday Concerts series at the Bridgewater Hall Manchester in March 2010. The version for flute and piano was premiered by Wissam Boustany (Flute) and Aleksander Szram (Piano) at St James's Church Piccadilly on Thursday 19 May 2011. 1. Ritual/Pastorale 2. Fertility Dance 3. Ghost Dance/Song 4. Sacrificial Dance Composer's Note The idea for the genesis of thiswork and indeed its title and individual movements came after visiting an exhibition at the British Museum entitled Moctezuma -Aztec Ruler. The exhibition traced the events following the election in 1502 of Moctezuma as Supreme Ruler of the Aztecs and the subsequent invasion of 1519 by a Spanish expedition led by Herman Cortés - an event that was to eventually lead to the demise of the Aztec civilisation. Part of the exhibition explored the role that music and dance played in Aztec life. The primitive recorder together with trumpets and drums were used as an important part of the formal ritual ceremonies (including rather gruesomely human sacrifice) that took place to appease the many Gods which the Aztecs worshipped as well as for other more informal occasions in their social and cultural life. I have tried to reflect some of these highly contrasting and dramatic ideas in this four movement work. Edward Gregson

The Chanson de Nuit was originally entitled Evensong though it is difficult to discern any religiosity in the work. And although published in 1897 scholars suggest that these works may have been written in the 1880’s. The contrast of the two melodies which Elgar then intertwines yield a satisfying short work especially with the composer’s fine Orchestration.Elgar published the Chanson de Nuit – and its partner Chanson de Matin – at the time of his life when he was also creating the Enigma Variations and The Dream of Gerontius. This work was originally created as a Violin and Piano duet but Elgar then Orchestrated the work and it was presented at the Proms. Sincethen other arrangements have been created.
