Euphonium Solo-A Final Fling was written at the request of David Childs for a CD recording with a Celtic theme which he released in 2007. The phrase ‘a final fling’ means a last quick effort at doing something perhaps when this item is used as an encore and also a fling is a type of Scottish Highland dance which tied in with the Celtic theme. A light- hearted piece A Final Fling starts in the mood of a folk dance and quotes from The Irish Washerwoman before flying to a close. A perfect way to put your euphonium player in the spotlight.

Trompeten-Ouvertüre- The Overture in C major the so-called Trumpet Overture with its brass fanfare was composed in 1826 and a second version with considerable revisions was made in 1833 for performances in Dusseldorf and London. The Overture in C major was first published posthumously in 1867. Christopher Hogwood's Urtext edition takes into account both Mendelssohn's autograph now held in the Bibliothèque nationale in Paris which has two endings as well as the London manuscript copy made for the performance there in 1834; this manuscript contains three separate trombone parts in Mendelssohn's hand. The newBärenreiter edition presents the work as found in Mendelssohn's autograph for the first time. This short opening music was composed on commission of the symphonic band of Jan Van der Roost's village (= Kontich near Antwerp / Belgium). In 1991 this community band celebrated its 100th anniversary. After composing commissioned pieces from different countries (even from Japan) this was the most 'near' commission he ever received indeed!It is a short but varied piece featuring all sections of the band. After a short introduction played by the brass instruments a crisp rhythm starts and boxes the main theme. After a second theme played by brass and percussion a short melodical passage brings some 'rest'. At the end the fanfare of the introductionreoccurs.Although this Centennial Prelude isn't a really demanding piece it sounds colourful and energetic. It has been recorded on CD by the band of the 'Royal Dutch Airforce' and the 'Desford Colliery Brass band'.

A comparison of the sources reveals two versions of the work: the original version and the one revised for Fontainebleau whereby the differences lie mainly in the final divertissement.This edition recommends the Fontainebleau version - which is actually more complete in its musical form in particular with its overture and two ariettas - but also reconstructs the original state of the final divertissement (presented in theappendix) before it was revised. Contest March-Philip Sparke wrote this march for the famous brass band contest held ever year on Whit Friday in Oldham and Saddleworth. Given the competition’s long history (over 120 years) he consciously composed this piece in a very traditional march form. The title The Conqueror refers to Alexander the Great’s nickname as well as being something every band aspires to be!

Three Russian Dances-This suite was written in the style of traditional Russian folk music but does not use existing melodies or themes as its basis. The colourful and varied work contains a number of surprising turns but also familiar sounds. After the introduction a kind of Trepak follows ? a fairly quick dance with attractive themes. The second movement (Garovot) is predominantly slow and conveys some melancholy although during a more dynamic passage the passion flares up again. Finally the Troika takes us along in a reindeer sleigh through a grand snowy landscape. This is a wonderful tribute to the music of Eastern Europe in the style of some of the great Russian masters.

Edvard Grieg (1843-1907) Norway’s most famous composer has written a lot of music which is definitely worth playing and listening to! Play Grieg features a selection of well-known and lesser-known works or themes. Since most of these were originally written for instruments other than the one for which they are intended in this volume things such as tempi have been carefully adapted from the original parts or pieces have been shortened to ensure playability.

King Arthur is a five-movement suite based on the famous Arthur ledged. It forms part of the ‘Easy Band 4’ series in which all pieces have ten-part instrumentation (+ percussion) so can be performed by bands who do not have a full compliment of players. An old Yorkshire carol arranged by John Carol Case for SATB chorus with Organ accompaniment.

While composing this beautiful chorale Hayato Hirose was inspired by the fond memory of the pre-marital days he spent with his beloved wife Minako.The chorale starts with gorgeous woodwinds after which the brass section is gradually added to enhance the atmosphere. The main theme is repeated and developed in several different keys in the middle section followed by the recapitulation and the romantic coda that concludes the work. Moment Musical gives any concert programme a touch of warmth and tenderness.
