If in his concertos for solo instrument and orchestra Saint-Saëns freed himself from the Viennese classical model (reconfiguring it with originality but in the light certainly of the formal experimentations of Schumann and of Biedermeier virtuosity) in the Romance opus 37 and other works of similar form (opus 27 36 and 48) he adopted the Romantic ternary Liedform (A–B–A) – in particular that of Schumann’s Stücke and Mendelssohn’s Lieder ohne Worte – and transcended the idiomaticity of the respective solo instruments now interchangeable ad libitum (flute or violin in the case of opus 37) therebymaking the pieces more widely usable and emphasizing their cantabile quality. This is a comprehensive approach to the second third fourth and fifth positions for the violin. Accompanied by detailed notes and instructions for each position this book is largely devoted to mastering the third position. It builds a foundation for students interested in masterful violin playing and encourages them to study the higher positions further.

E-flat major- Many wholly new corrections in the solo and orchestral parts. Piano reduction with a separate solo part as was customary in Beethoven ’s day. With Beethoven ’s continuo figures for the first time in a modern edition. Beethoven ’s fifth and final Piano Concerto is at the same time the culmination of his efforts in this genre and a reflection of all his artistic skill and expertise. The surviving manuscripts provide a clear insight into his working methods and his intentions regarding the work’s performance. The editor Jonathan Del Mar has closely scrutinised the autograph solo piano part and reproduced Beethoven’ssophisticated performance instructions for the first time in a modern edition. Among other things this has special repercussions for the left-hand figured bass line of the piano part during the tutti passages. As with the Piano Concertos Nos. 1 to 4 the Piano reduction appears with a separate solo part containing all the information needed by the soloist to conduct the ensemble from the Piano.

Erbarme Dich mein Gott from St Matthew Passion- Have Mercy Lord from J.S. Bach’s St Matthew Passion is one of the most beautiful arias from the baroque period. In Philip Sparke’s arrangement it is envisaged that the soloists stand together as a group stage right while the other musicians stand behind to form the tutti group. This piece is easily playable for both the soloists and the band and will create a beautiful moment of reflection whether performed on the concert stage or in a church.

Motet for five-part mixed choir- All of Bach ’s six authenticated motets were written between 1723 and 1727 for St Thomas’ Church Leipzig where Bach was appointed as director of music in 1723. During this period Bach composed most of his cantatas and it seems likely that for ordinary Sunday services he used existing motets from the seventeenth century tradition reserving his own motet compositions for special occasions. Four of his six motets were written for the funeral services of prominent members of the St Thomas’ congregation. Jesu Meine Freude (BWV 227) the longest most musically complex and earliest of the six was written in 1723 for the funeralof Johanna Maria Käsin the wife of Leipzig’s postmaster. Let the Earth Now Praise the Lord-The well-known chorale Nun komm der Heiden Heiland ( Let the Earth Now Praise the Lord ) was written by Martin Luther in 1524 and derives from a translation of a hymn from the 4th century before Christ. The melody was composed by JohannWalter however Johann Sebastian Bach used it as a basis for many cantatas. This arrangement by Jacob de Haan gives your band the chance to perform an attractive version of this beautiful chorale.
