based on the march from Henry Purcell's Music for the funeral of Queen Mary II-This composition is based on the march from Henry Purcell’s Music for the funeral of Queen Mary II a work written in 1694. In this fantasia various movements flow from one to the next following the main theme; these movements not onlyelaborate on the theme but also contrast with it. At times the thematic material diverges so much that the work acquires a character of its own; however the composer often refers back to fragments of the theme.

Grand Overture- Glorioso was commissioned by and is dedicated to the ‘Siena Wind Orchestra’. The work opens after a short aleatoric intro with an energetic and brassy ‘one tone fanfare’. The note F acts as an omnipresent note and is also used as a bridge into the second rather static movement. A noble sounding theme leads to an impressive climax shortly followed by the spectacular and virtuoso finale which is built on the musical elements that have been heard before. Stylistically this sparkling finale is clearly influenced by Dmitri Shostakovich hence the use of the famous signature used by the Russian Master: C – D – E flat – B (or C flat). A glorious finish to a special workthat highlights various facets of the modern concert band.

The material for Mozart ’s azione sacra is taken from the Old Testament book of Judith the story of the beautiful Israelite who steals into the enemy camp of the Assyrians and decapitates their sleeping commander Holofernes. Often called a stroke of genius by the fifteen-year-old Mozart Betulia Liberata brooks comparison with his early operas in every respect. But Mozart was evidently concerned to distinguish between an azione sacra and an azione teatrale in the music itself e.g. in the accompanied recitatives and the sacred aura of the final chorus. Performance material available for hire. First vocal scoreof Mozart ’s Betulia Liberata . Easy to play Piano reduction. Clear and uncluttered appearance on the page. Original Italian words underlaid with a new German translation. Bilingual preface in German and English.

for the Left Hand for Piano and Orchestra- In 1929 Paul Wittgenstein a pianist and war veteran who lost his right arm in the Great War commissioned Maurice Ravel to write a concerto for him to perform. The result was one of Ravel ’s most thrilling compositions and for Wittgenstein the most important of the many works he commissioned over the course of his career. This scholarly-critical edition of Ravel ’s Piano Concerto For The Left Hand is based on previously inaccessible and unknown sources. The editor Douglas Woodfull-Harris was able to consult manuscripts in the private library of the Paul Wittgenstein Estate which allowed him to retrace the work’s evolutionfrom Ravel ’s autograph working copy to the first printed edition. A source of key importance to our new edition is a handwritten French copy of Ravel ’s own Piano reduction (the autograph is inaccessible) that he gave to Wittgenstein to facilitate rehearsing the work. This copy is the sole source reflecting Wittgenstein’s own interpretation and containing his changes to the final cadenza. It also helps us to understand omissions in the first edition of the score as well as the Piano reduction and enabled the editor amongst other things to correct a great many notes which could be found in previous editions including the solo Piano part. The Piano reduction in our edition contains both Ravel ’s and Wittgenstein’s fingering. Also included is a solo part without fingering thereby giving pianists the opportunity to enter their own fingering after having studied those of Ravel and Wittgenstein. Score and orchestral parts in large format (25.5 x 32.5 cm) Includes source descriptions and a Critical Commentary with alternative readings (Eng) Informative Introduction on the work’s history and genesis (Ger/Eng/Fr) With facsimile pages Piano reduction with separate Urtext solo part enclosed Full score & parts (BA7881) and two-Piano reduction (BA7881-90) available for sale
