Turlough O'Carolan (1670-1738) is regarded as one of the last great harp-players of Ireland and seems to be surrounded by an almost mystical aura. Numerous anecdotes exist which testify to a strong personality and a tremendous musical talent as well as enormous self-confidence. Unlike any other he knew how to combine old Irish music with Italian Baroque music creating numerous compositions about 200 of which have survived. 16 of them have been chosen and arranged by Patrick Pföß for the delightful instrumentation of two Flutes and Alto Flute. Content: O'Carolan's Concerto Lady Gethin John Jameson Blind Mary JohnDrury (Second Air) Colonel O'Hara Charles O'Conor O'Carolans Farewell to Music - O'Hara's Cup Thomas Leixlip the Proud Madam Maxwell Receipt for Drinking Princess Royal Mrs. Garvey (First Air) Lament for Owen Roe O'Neill Michael O'Connor (First Air)

Phantasmagoria for Violin Violoncello and Piano was composed by Bent Sørensen in 2007. First performance by Trio con Brio 12 Aug 2007 in Roskilde Denmark. Programme note: My Piano Trio Phantasmagoria is in five movements. It all began with the fifth movement which originally was a tiny piece for cello and piano. After re-composing this little piece for piano trio I worked composed backwards &ndash The fourth movement &ndash third movement - and I finally got to the beginning of the piece. It all begins with the violin &ndash solo &ndash heavily muted but aggressive and gradually the cello and the piano enter as shadows of the violin. The first movementends in a dark shadow of an aria from my opera Under the Sky . All five movements are full of shadows of all kinds. Shadows of fragments and traces of movements appear in other movements. Music voices instruments appear behind each other as a play of shadows. Shadow play was the first title on my mind but a shadow play can be more physical &ndash the shadow can come alive &ndash alive behind the shadows. Phantasmagoria is a shadow play in darkness where contours of persons and music voices and instruments - create adventures behind each other. Phantasmagoria was commissioned by Franz Schubert Society Denmark and dedicated to Trio con Brio Copenhagen. Clog Dances Fom The Lanca-Clog Dances from the Lancashire Cotton Mills arranged for Two Violins (or Violin & Viola) with optional Cello. Clog dancing originated in the North of England over 200 years ago. It is thought to have developed in the Lancashire Cotton Mills where wooden-soled clogs were preferred to leather soles because the floors were kept wet to help keep the humidity high an important feature in cotton spinning as the nails in leather soles could cause sparks which could result in the risk of explosion. The Clog dance steps were inspired by the rhythmic sounds of the textile machinery and it is said to have first been danced by girls working in the cotton mills. Theywould beat out a rhythm with their wooden clogs to keep in time with the shuttle flying backwards and forwards across the loom. They would also sing choruses whilst stepping to the rhythm of their machines. There were a variety of machines in the many mills of the Midlands and North West each machine built for a specific function. There were many rhythms and as the girls clog danced it is said that those watching the dancers could tell which machines they worked at and from which mill. Clog dancers were also a common sight not only at the mill's lunch breaks but also at competitions in towns and in Music Halls throughout the 19^th and 20th centuries.
