Moonlight Serenade was composed in 1939 by Glenn Miller in his typically American big-band style. It was an immediate success and it even became the signature tune of Glenn Miller. The catchy melody has since been used in various films and television series. It has been performed in many styles from romantic to swinging. The Flanders Recorder Quartet likes to play this work with a low recorder consort: tenor F bass C bass great bass (each instrument then plays an octave lower). This gives the work a slightly “close harmony” feel. Of course the more usual line-up also does the music justice.

Vltava (The Moldau) is the most famous and frequently performed tone poem from the cycle Má Vlast by the Czech composer Bed ich Smetana . It was written between 20 November and 8 December 1874 but only in 1879-1880 with the completion of Má Vlast did it appear in print when Urbánek issued it in full score along with a version for Piano duet. Owing to the large number of misprints in the Urbánek first edition Hugh Macdonald has based this new edition on the autograph score with cross-references to the first edition and the composer’s own version for Piano duet. For every new edition which has appeared during the course of time there have been only two authentic sources to draw upon; the copyist’s manuscript of the score with Beethoven ’s own corrections and the first edition in parts from 1808 which was published in Vienna and which contains a few revisions dated after the aforementioned manuscript. Though no new sources have been available for this new edition numerous editorial emendations which have prevailed in all previous editions (evenUrtext editions) have now been corrected.
