FRANZ BERWALD (1796-1868) is regarded today not only as one of Sweden's most important composers but also due to his symphonies and his chamber music as a leading figure in the history of Northern European music of the 19th century. His compositions include in addition to four symphonies and the chamber music tone poems for orchestra concertos operas ('Estrella di Soria' and 'The Queen of Golconda') cantatas solo songs with piano accompaniment piano music and much more. Berwald's violin concerto in C sharp minor is the work of a young composer. The autograph score bears the date 1820; Berwald was 24 years old at the time. After the firstperformance the violin concerto fell into oblivion and was as far as we know never again performed in Berwald's lifetime. It was not brought to light again until 1903 when on May 19 the first movement was performed at the Annual Celebration of the Academy of Music of Stockholm. The sparse score written by Nino Rota is famous for its haunting main theme played by a solo trumpet from which The Godfather Waltz is derived. Philip Sparke has created a stunning arrangement of this theme which appears in all three parts of the trilogy.

The well-known 16th Century canon by Thomas Tallis is as effective as it is simple. This arrangement includes four verses of the melody: the first in the form of canon; the second for brass; the third for woodwind and the fourth for the entire orchestra. Philip Sparke’s arrangement is also well suited for incomplete brass ensembles.

This flashing piece was commissioned by 'Het muziekverbond van West-Vlaanderen' and is dedicated to the 'Arlequino' youthband.Colourfully and effectfully instrumentated this piece speeds towards its finale without any tempo changes. The chord-blocks which characterized the introduction unite this virtuoso piece by reappearing in the end.

Nel blu dipintu di blu-In 1958 Domenico Modugno (1928-1994) song Nel blu dipinto di blu (or Volare) was the Italian entry at the Eurovision Song Contest. Modugno did not win the contest (he became third) but the song - a true sing-along - turned out to be a worldwide hit. In the course of decades Volare has been translated into various languages and performed by many artists of repute like The Gipsy Kings Dean Martin Louis Armstrong Petula Clark and David Bowie. With this catchy arrangement Lorenzo Bocci has given Volare a wonderfully fitting Concert Band sound.

Between 1996 and 2000 Bärenreiter published scholarly-critical editions of Beethoven 's Nine Symphonies edited by the first class musicologist Jonathan Del Mar. The editorial process was a huge undertaking because of the complex source situation regarding Beethoven 's Symphonies culminating in the Choral Symphony (No.9) which came down to the publisher in nearly 20 different sources.
