Johan de Meij’s first symphony The Lord of the Rings is based on the trilogy of that name by J.R.R. Tolkien. This book has fascinated many millions of readers since its publication in 1955. The symphony consists of five separate movements each illustrating a personage or an important episode from the book. The fourth movement describes the laborious journey of the Fellowship of the Ring headed by the wizard Gandalf through the dark tunnels of the Mines of Moria. The slow walking cadenza and the fear are clearly audible in the monotonous rhythm of the low brass piano and percussion. After a wild pursuit by hostile creatures the Orks Gandalf is engaged in battle witha horrible monster the Balrog and crashes from the subterranean bridge of Khazad-Dûm in a fathomless abyss. To the melancholy tones of a Marcia funèbre the bewildered Companions trudge on looking for the only way out of the Mines the East Gate of Moria. The Legend of Ali Baba is a provocative composition that was a joint work between Bert Appermont and Frank Van Baelen. This composition is subdivided into different scenes which of course refer to the legend of Ali Baba. A splendid concert piece with a high musical content also very impressive at competitions.

The Hornpipe is a typical Celtic solo dance traditionally danced and performed by English sailors. A sound often associated with the Hornpipe is that of the Bódhran an Irish drum made with a sheep’s skin head. John Nijs has taken great care in creating an authentic-sounding Hornpipe in which the Bódhran part is played by the tambourine but sounds just as good!

Als die alte Mutter (Songs My Mother Taught Me - Chansons que ma mère me chantait) est le quatrième des sept chants du cycle. Cette mélodie profonde et émouvante souligne toutes les inflexions du poème en langue allemande du célèbre poète tchèque Adolf Heyduk. Plusieurs générations de brillantes sopranos dont Nellie Melba Joan Sutherland et Renée Fleming ont interprété et enregistré cette mélodie si bien qu’elle est connue d’un large public.Cette édition combine deux versions : une version purement instrumentale et uneadaptation pour Soprano solo et Orchestre d’Harmonie. Les deux versions ont été réalisées par Tohru Takahashi.

‘Martenizza’ is the Bulgarian word for the month March. This work describes an old custom in Bulgaria introduced to the composer was through Ivo Stoykov a Bulgarian acquaintance. In accordance with tradition good friends give each other a number of white and red pennants on the 1st of March. When a stork has been spotted for the first time in March the pennants are hung in a tree and one can make a wish. According to the custom friends wish each other health and happiness for the coming year.
