Sinfonietta: The Town Beneath the Cliff was commissioned by Holmestrand Ungdomskorps from Vestfold in Norway. The work is in four movements: a spectacular fanfare followed by a ‘moto perpetuo’-like toccata. The third movement Hymn is a beautiful piece of music allowing the band to show its musicality and sound. The last movement Scherzo Finale opens with a short phrase from Holmestrand’s own ‘town song’ – Holmestrandsangen which comes again in full at the end of the piece accompanied by a florid passage based on the opening theme.

This nondenominational sampler presents well-known organ pieces for use in funeral services. It is aimed primarily at semiprofessional organists who have to play on the usually modest instruments found in cemetery chapels. The volume contains organ pieces both with and without chorale cantus firmus. It has been compiled by two professional church musicians one Catholic and the other Lutheran thereby reflecting present day musical practice at funerals. The volume includes many pieces often requested at funerals such as the “Pie Jesu” from Fauré’s Requiem Mozart’s “Ave verum” and Brahms’s “In Peace and Joy I Now Depart”. The pieces arepresented in simplified form without the use of the pedals. However their compositional quality remains untouched and the stylistic breadth extends to church songs with popular music styles thereby offering organists a very wide selection. Page turns within a given piece have been avoided wherever possible. In addition to a table of contents and thumbnail biographies there is an explanatory preface. - Nondenominational collection of organ pieces frequently played at funerals - Easy level of difficulty - Designed also for small instruments without pedals

Besides being an influential and prolific composer Johann Sebastian Bach (1685-1750) was one of the great teachers of his day. He was a dedicated master of the keyboard always exploring and expanding his knowledge of the instrument. Technique was of paramount significance to Bach and he was always developing exercises to improve his students’ playing. Bach developed those exercises into the pieces presented in 18 Short Preludes . However these compositions are more than keyboard exercises. They are light airy fun works that reflect Bach’s love of the short simple prelude form. They provide the beginning student with an excellent introduction to the genius ofJ.S. Bach. This edition was carefully and methodically prepared by Willard A. Palmer. An introductory section offers a thorough explanation of trills mordents appoggiaturas and other proper ornamentation applicable to these preludes. This feature helps make this edition of Bach’s 18 Short Preludes the most practical and attractive one available.

Between 1996 and 2000 Bärenreiter published scholarly-critical editions of Beethoven 's Nine Symphonies edited by the first class musicologist Jonathan Del Mar. The editorial process was a huge undertaking because of the complex source situation regarding Beethoven 's Symphonies culminating in the Choral Symphony (No.9) which came down to the publisher in nearly 20 different sources. So it was not surprising that Bärenreiter's new Urtext edition caused a considerable stir in the music world. Since publication Del Mar's edition enjoys the unabashed praise of conductors performers and critics alike and has become the most widely used publication ofthe Beethoven Symphonies which can be heard not only every day in concert halls but also on CD recordings by John Eliot Gardiner David Zinman Jos van Immerseel and Claudio Abbado. Full scores study scores and complete performance material to Beethoven ’s Nine Symphonies are available for sale.

In Pavane the base line which runs throughout the entire piece forms the leitmotiv. This special work unfurls slowly and is based on chords that are reminiscent of Bach or Scarlatti. Towards the middle it builds up a climax that disappears in exactly the same manner as it began.

Jubiloso was commissioned by Utsunomiya Brass Society a talented and versatile group of brass players whom Philip Sparke has conducted on many occasions. When they asked him to compose a ‘signature’ march to celebrate their 30th anniversary they asked for a bright and breezy march which they could use to open concerts. Jubiloso is in the same ‘Broadway’ style as Sparke’s Slipstream and The Bandwagon with heavily syncopated melodies and the conventional cantabile trio section but also contains sudden bars with unusual time signatures which trip up the march rhythm.
