The world premiere took place with trumpet soloist Osamu Kumashiro and was conducted by the composer who was inspired by the famous Ponte Vecchio (the old bridge) during a visit to Florence. Accompanied by one of Shostakovich's most popular and accessible film-scores The Gadfly was a highly successful film inside the Soviet Union in its day a sugary and entertaining costume drama based on a once very popular historical novel by the English writer Ethel Voynich like a cross between The Three Musketeers' and The Scarlet Pimpernel'. The hero is a swashbuckling revolutionary in Risorgimento Italy and the 1830s/1840s Italian setting gives the composer a chance for delicious pastiches in the style of Bellini and Verdi as well as pseudo-Neapolitan songs and folk-tunes. Most famous are the catchy Galop and the syrupyRomance which have been recycled many times in TV shows and advertisements and will quickly appeal to those who prefer their music on the lighter side.

from the Musical 'A Little Night Music'- Send in the Clowns is one of the most well known songs written by composer Stephen Sondheim. The ironic lyrics have a present-day meaning. It was recorded by the likes of Judy Collins Frank Sinatra and Barbra Streisand. Between them all they brought this song eternal fame. The Norwegian arranger Richard Johnsen who is very familiar with this musical repertoire made this beautiful arrangement and kept it very close to the sound of the original version.

Clowns And Acrobats is ideal for young dynamic bands. After a short mysterious introduction follows an infectious theme that is varied in different manners. It ends with a spectacular climax yet technically it is not too difficult.
