Proud was written for the music event Grutsk which is the Friesian word for proud – hence the title. Various bands have performed on five different stages across the town centre. The finale was performed in a concert held at Wilhelminaplein (Wilhelmina Square) which opened with this work. This world premiere was conducted by the composer himself. The bagpipes areoptional but advisable. As a whole they give the composition a very special sound. Japanese born Ryo Noda (b. 1948) has been hailed for his forward-looking avant-garde compositions and innovative playing techniques. Phoenix is no exception. Noda 's compositional achievements were significantly recognised in 1973 when he was awarded the SACEM Composition Prize. Phoenix was published soon after at the height of his career. Exploiting extended techniques on the Saxophone to their full potential Noda provides a detailed score with instruction. However a significant amount of interpretation with regards to tempo pauses and pitch bends is left to the performer. Phoenix isone of many significant works for solo Saxophone by the composer. For all saxophonists Noda 's Phoenix is an excellent varied addition to advanced repertoires.

Olivier Messiaen (1908-1992) was admitted to the Paris Conservatoire at the mere age of 11 where he won many prizes. As a passionate ornithologist as well as organist and composer many of Messiaen 's works depict birdsong. His music is rhythmically complex harmonically unique and melodically distinct often using modes oflimited transposition. It is for these reasons that the composer compiled his Treaty . The fifth volume contains text with musical examples describing the unique use of birdsong in his music as well as an analysis of his Japanese Sketches for Piano and Orchestra. Armenian composer and pianist Alexandre Aroutiounian (1920-2012) was awarded many prizes for his compositions throughout his career. His Aria and Scherzo for Trumpet and Piano is little-known yet it is a sublime addition to the modern repertoire. Aroutiounian 's works have been performed all over the world and he is particularly remembered for his Trumpet Concerto. Melodic and rhythmic characteristics of Armenian music are prominent in Aroutiounian 's works further expressing his nationality by use of ashughner (folk minstrel) improvisations. Aria and Scherzo is made up of twomovements the Aria marked as adagio and the Scherzo as allegretto. Tonality is exploited throughout and contains unique uses of rhythm and ensemble. Aroutiounian 's Aria and Scherzo is an exciting piece for all advanced trumpeters.
