Nicolai Mass- The name of the “Missa Sancti Nicolai” refers to the composition of the Mass for St. Nicholas Day in 1772. Every year on this day a Mass was held in honor of the Prince of Esterházy who shared his name-day with St. Nicholas. It is thought that Haydn wrote this composition specifically to thank the Prince for allowing him to return to Eisenstadt. Some years later trumpet and timpani parts were added to the work. As with the “Great Organ Mass” these additional parts were not actually written by Haydn himself but simply authorized by him. They are included in the score and performance material so that both versions can be performed. The themes in Keltic Variations are based in the style of the sea chanteys that were sung and taught by rote to sailors in northwestern Europe. This composition is written for students at the middle school and high school level and its purpose is to introduce simple theme and variations. I normally resist approaching the composisiton of a piece from an educational standpoint but my ideas for Keltic Variations felt more like teaching tools than anything else. After I finished it I believed I had found a balance between a piece that falls well on audiences' ears but also can serve as a music lesson in the rehearsal room.Symphonic Band (full score). Theresa Mass- Between 1796 and 1802 Haydn composed 6 great Masses to celebrate the name day of Princess Maria Hermenegild the wife of his patron Prince Nikolaus Esterhazy II. Heilig-Messe- Bernard of Offida 1604–1694 was a Capuchin monk whose saintly life and devotion to the sick and poor caused him to be beatified by Pope Pius VI on 19 May 1795. St. Bernard’s name day falls on the 11th of September (a Saturday in 1797) and it is generally thought that Haydn combined doing honour to the Capuchin monk with the production of a new Mass for his patron the day thereafter. Apparently later performances in Eisenstadt added horns to double the trumpets in the tuttis and – just as in the previous Mass – the clarinet parts were enlarged; it is almost certain that the new clarinet parts are either by Haydn or (shall we say) “supervised” by him. As inthe Mass in Time of War conductors have the choice of two orchestrations: with or without doubling horns and with or without the supplementary clarinet parts. The Heiligmesse has always been one of Haydn’s most admired works. Its dignity its strength (we draw special attention to the extraordinary “Gratias” with its brilliant contrapuntal writing) the subdued orchestral grandeur to which the B-flat trumpets contribute a silvery but unmartial weight – all these have made it one of Haydn’s most serious and most deeply sensitive church works: its constant popularity in Viennese churches is quite deserved. from Islas y Montañas-Shelley Hanson originally composed Islas y Montañas for orchestra. Tocata is the first movement and functions as a fanfare or introduction. It features the entire ensemble clapping rhythmic patterns based on the Cuban 3/2-clave rhythm. It's a great way to get the crowd ready for La Tumba de Alejandro Garcia Caturla originally the fourth movement from Islas y Montañas. It is beautifully transcribed here for concert band. It is a musical rumination about Cuban composer Alejandro Garcia Caturla (1906-1940) who studied with Nadia Boulanger but was later assassinated while presiding as a judge. It opens with a haunting English horn cadenza (alternate cueing provided) followed byharmonic shifts intense soli writing and driving rhythms that sweep through the ensemble.
