18 studies written to develop familiarity with the main types of scales and arpeggios in Jazz. More enjoyable than the scales themselves James Rae has deliberately chosen keys that give a comfortable user-friendly introduction to the various tonalities. Each section describes a particular type of scale and includes studies based on it. Included are: the major scale the dorian mode the mixolydian mode the minor pentatonic scale the jazz melodic minor scale the blues scale the chromatic scale the whole tone scale and the diminished scale. Studies in each of these volumes have been set as an alternative to scales for all grades on the Jazz Flute Jazz Clarinetand Jazz Saxophone syllabuses of the new Trinity Guildhall Examinations 2007.

Written by Gabriel Yared composer to the scores for The English Patient Cold Mountain and The Talented Mr Ripley this folio of 20 original Clarinet pieces has been designed to inspire andencourage duettists especially teacher/pupil collaborations. The idea grew out of composer Gabriel Yared’s own learning experience which suggested a need for one part to be written for the experienced teacher and anotherfor the developing novice. The duets themselves progress from beginner to advanced levels gradually addressing new technical problems as they go as well as providing varied and stimulating music to play. Theaccompanying CDs includes a full recording of each duet as well as two alternative playalong versions each giving prominence to one part or the other. The publication comes with individual parts completing a package thatwas developed composed and produced as a completely original way of learning clarinet duets.

Six recreational pieces in a range of styles which resemble improvisations which have been notated.

In 2009 one year after its formation the Swiss brass ensemble Azimuts Brass commissioned its conductor Marc Jeanbourquin to write them a signature tune. He composed Jazzimut which features a festive introduction followed by a lyrical theme. After a few bars of rock rhythm Jazzimut goes disco and finishes with a recapitulation of the introduction as a fanfare. Now available for concert band this is an entertaining piece from start to finish!

Like many composers who found themselves in exile during the war years Castelnuovo-Tedesco composed in a very neoclassical and neoromantic style reviving more traditional or antiquated ideas of melody tonality and texture. The range of tonal colour that can be produced by the clarinet made it eminently suitable for Debussy's impressionistic compositions and it featured greatly in his orchestral works. Only a few works however for the solo instrument were composed. James Rae presents some of Debussy's most popular concert pieces in these arrangements for clarinet and piano. Clarinettists will now have the pleasure of bringing to life for example: the Ragtime flair of 'Le petit nègre' the beauty of 'La plus que lente' and the clumsiness of the little elephant in 'Jimbo's Lullaby'.
