The work contains one large construction with different high points whereby the main theme is varied or orchestrated each time in one way or another finally ending in an impressive finale.

Duetto Per Violoncello E Contrabbasso . Composed in London near the end of 1824 the Duetto is one of the few chamber music works regularly performed today. It is a light and charming composition yet requires experienced performers. The work was often performed in the 19th century by the Double Bass virtuoso Domenico Dragonetti (called ‘Il drago’ or ‘Paganini of the Double Bass’) and we know that Rossini was acquainted with and consulted Dragonetti on matters dealing with the instrument. Meditation on 'Quem Pastores Laudavere'-Carol of the Shepherds is based on the hymn tune 'Quem Pastores Laudavere' which dates back to the 14th century and is widely known throughout the Christian world. Although the melody has been set to a number of different texts in different countries it was originally a carol celebrating the Christmas story in particular the visit of the Angel Gabriel to the shepherds.

The tune has since been the inspiration for at least four different Christmas carols of which Carol of the Bells is the most famous. Philip Sparke has sourced the original Ukrainian melody to create this stirring arrangement. To this day Eugène Bozza (1905-1991) remains one of the most prolific composers for wind instruments despite being a violinist himself. His Douze études-Caprices for Saxophone will enable the pupil to attain brilliant technique on the instrument. During his studies at the Paris Conservatoire Bozza won prizes for Violin conducting and composition as well as the Grand Prix de Rome. He then conducted the orchestra of the Opéra-Comique and became Head of the Conservatoire in Valenciennes whilst remaining a prominent composer. The studies in Bozza 's books prepare students for the most difficultrhythms and melody writings. Furthermore Douze études-Caprices contains exercises on range intervals embouchure breath control phrasing articulation and dynamics among other aspects. Being Caprices all Bozza 's studies are lively short and free from form making for a unique and essential aid in the progression of advanced Saxophone studies.

Claude Debussy wrote his two books of piano Preludes late in life between 1909 and 1913. The 12 short pieces in each book display a rich variety of styles moods and emotions almost a summing up of his compositional output and each has its own evocative title. Manhattan was commissioned by the United States Army Band for their solo cornet player Woodrow English and first performed by them in Carnegie Hall New York in November 2003. The two-movement work demonstrates both the lyrical and technical abilities of this outstanding player. The 'theme' is a weekend in New York and the opening bluesy movement Saturday Serenade describes the city on a Saturday night. While writing Sunday Scherzo the composer pictured an early morning jog in Central Park. This vivaciously rhythmic second movement ends with an even quicker coda bringing the work to a brilliant close. Each movement can also be playedindividually when a shorter solo is required.
