Rush Hour was commissioned by the Swiss Brass Band Association (SBBV) on the occasion of the 38th Swiss National Brass Band Championships 2012 (Montreux SBBW) as the test piece in the Championship division.Structured in three parts without breaks the work opens in a heavy oppressive atmosphere sometimes even noisy. After a short passage in a lighter mood a quick tempo takes over the music becomes nervous and unrelenting with constant twists and turns. The tension builds leading to a slower movement in which various soloists are highlighted. A few humorous touches are heard in contrast to a majestic powerful and dramatic chorale. The end of this part is brighter andmore peaceful. This atmosphere is soon replaced by a return of the thematic material heard in the first movement developing into an oppressive moos. The piece concludes with a last ecstatic tutti reusing the harmonies of the introduction in a kind of final flurry. Rush Hour attempts to express the range of feelings we may experience when caught in various stressful situations in the middle of the rush hour.

Jakub Jan Ryba (1765-1815) was a provincial music teacher. He wrote more than 1 100 works of varying length and form including approximately thirty masses. The most famous of these is his Czech Christmas Mass from 1796 which thanks to its joyful mood has become an integral part of the Czech Christmas festivities. The piece is published in a Piano reduction by Josef Hercl suitable for rehearsal and practice without orchestra; Ryba 's Czech Christmas Mass can thus also be performed less formally by amateur associations or at home. - Performance material available for hire.

French composer and conductor Henri Tomasi (1901-1971) published Fanfares Liturgiques in 1952. As with his other wind compositions Fanfares Liturgiques was well-received by audiences. Tomasi was born in Marseille but his Father and Mother were originally from La Casinca in Corsica. Despite being pressured into musical studies by his parents Tomasi dreamed of becoming a sailor and during the summer he stayed with his Grandmother in Corsica where he learnt traditional Corsican songs. However in 1921 he began his studies at the Paris Conservatoire and went on to become ahigh profile composer and conductor. Tomasi did not forget his Corsican routes often incorporating themes of the songs he had learnt during the summers with his Grandmother into his compositions. Composed for an unusual instrumentation of Brass Ensemble Timpani and Drums Fanfares Liturgiques comprises four movements; 1) Annunciation 2) Gospel 3) Apocalypse and 4) Good Friday Procession. This Tomasi piece is suitable to advanced players and provides an exciting alternative addition to the ensemble repertoire.

The Irish folk tune which appears towards the end of the piece is Slane a hymn tune version of the much older folk melody The Banks of the Bann . In Prelude on an Irish Folk Tune fragments of the folk tune hint at what is to come later in the piece but another folk-like tune is predominant. This later acts as a descant to Slane when it finally appears. Add a little Sparke sparkle to any concert with this lovely interlude.

Ceremonial Ode-For St Cecilia Ceremonial Ode for tenor solo chorus & orchestra; words by Edmund Blunden. The original work was commissioned by the St Cecilia’s Day Festival Committee for the 1947 celebration of music’s patron saint. The ceremonial mood is established with fanfares and the sonorous sweep of the choral writing reflects Finzi’s admiration for Parry and Elgar. The ‘catalogue’ of saints shared between the soloist and chorus are deftly delineated: St Valentine St George St Dunstan St Swithin and St Cecilia herself. In rapt stillness the English composers of the past – Merbecke Byrd Dowland and Purcell – are summoned. To close Finzi creates a festal summation withexultant counterpoint and the saint’s name pealing around the chorus. This ceremonial ode to St. Cecilia was commissioned by the St. Cecilia's Day Festival Committee and was first performed at the Royal Albert Hall in 1947. The text is a beautiful and devout celebration by Edmund Blunden and the work is intended for performance by a large SATB chorus. A Piano reduction of the original orchestral score provides an intricate accompaniment.
