The melodies harmonies moods and rhythms of Norwegian folk songs and dance (even the sounds of Norwegian folk instruments) permeate the music of Edvard Grieg (1843-1907). After studying in Leipzig and Copenhagen he returned to Norway and a chance meeting with Norwegian nationalist Rikard Nordraak ignited his interest in folk music and laid the foundation for his compositional style. His most famous orchestral works are the Piano Concerto (1868) and the incidental music to Ibsen’s play Peer Gynt (1875). He wrote many collections of folk music for piano and these two tunes come from his 25 Norwegian Folk Songs and Dances op. 17.

Wachet auf ruft uns die Stimme-This enchanting melody is from the fourth movement of Bach’s Cantata 140 which was composed in 1731 using the parable of the wise and foolish virgins as the text. The work is beautiful in its simplicity with only three melodic lines demonstrating Bach’s counterpoint at its best. For greatest effect it is suggested that the cornets and trombones play behind the band or to the right and left of the stage.

Elegy for Band-The initial idea was for a millennium piece which it is but rather than add to the many celebratory pieces that have understandably been written to salute the 3rd millennium Philip Sparke thought it would perhaps be appropriate to think about the aspects of life that are constantly with us (such as faith and philosophy) rather than the exciting changes that the year 2000 has undeniably wrought. This calm meditative work will bring a moment of serenity and reflection to any concert.

French composer and conductor Henri Tomasi (1901-1971) published Sonatine for solo Flute in 1949. As with his other wind compositions Sonatine was well-received by audiences. Tomasi was born in Marseille but his Father and Mother were originally from La Casinca in Corsica. Despite being pressured into musical studies by his parents Tomasi dreamed of becoming a sailor and during the summer he stayed with his Grandmother in Corsica where he learnt traditional Corsican songs. However in 1921 he began his studies at the Paris Conservatoire and went on to become a high profilecomposer and conductor. Tomasi did not forget his Corsican routes often incorporating themes of the songs he had learnt during the summers with his Grandmother in to his compositions. Sonatine for solo Flute is a highly unusual complex and modern work in three movements; 1) Prelude and Scherzo 2) Pastorale and 3) Finale. This Tomasi piece is suitable to advanced flautsits providing an exciting alternative addition to the instrument's repertoire.

Cantata for Christmas Day- Gelobet seist du Jesu Christ BWV 91 Cantata for Christmas Day The cantata Gelobet seist du Jesu Christ was composed by J. S. Bach for Christmas Day 1724. It belongs to that yearly set of “chorale cantatas” the texts of which were mostly derived from a single chorale. The anonymous author of the text used to retain literally the first and last verses of the selected chorale but paraphrased the middle verses more or less freely in the form of recitatives arias and ariosi.
