The oratorio “ Esther ” is the first English language oratorio and also the first oratorio by Handel based on a theatre tragedy - Jean Racine’s “Esther”. For the first time Handel drew on his knowledge gathered from stays in Germany Italy and England. He created his own particular style of oratorio writing which differs from the later integrative works. Many sections of this composition harken back to the previously composed “Brockes-Passion”. The first performance took place in 1720. For the first public performance of the work in London in 1732 Handel arranged and enlarged “ Esther ”. Haydn was in England in 1795 when he received word from his new Prince Nicolaus II Esterházy that the Esterházy orchestra was to be reformed and Haydn was to serve again as active Capellmeister. Prince Nicolaus II demanded little from his Capellmeister except the usual routine of administration; but Haydn was to compose every year a new Mass for the name day of the Princess Josepha Maria which was celebrated the Sunday afterwards in the Bergkirche at Eisenstadt. It is known that a new Haydn mass was performed before a packed congregation in the Piaristenkirche in Vienna on St. Stephen’s Day (26 December) 1796. The writer of these notes examined – when preparingthis edition – the music archives of the church and found contemporary parts on the Missa in tempore belli in the church; and it seems certain that this (and not the Heiligmesse) was the work performed on that occasion and thus also the work which Haydn had just finished and performed in Eisenstadt. The Basic of Cello technique in selected etudes-Studies play an important role in musical instrument training. Gerhard Mantel's new edition 'Etüden üben' [Practising studies] (3 volumes) complements his previous successful book 'Cello üben' (ED 8714). The basics of cello technique are worked on in selected studies with the focus being not only on the ability to learn a technically and musically oriented text within a reasonable time but also on the solution of certain problems typical of the cello. Vol. 1 covers aspects ranging from the orientation on the fingerboard via changes of position vibrato and trills to changes of strings and double stops. Vol. 2 deals with fingerings whole-bow stroke dynamics articulation and types of bowing among others. The final volume contains studies on legato arpeggios chords martellato staccato spiccato and changes of rhythm. The accompanying volume of commentaries (for all three volumes) describes in detail the methodological practising processes.
