Ed Hughes' Secret Sky for Piano Quartet. Secret Sky was commissioned by the Schubert Ensemble's Chamber Music 2000 project and has been performed by school children in the south west of England and in the Purcell Room by music college students. The piece lasts 4 minutes and aims to create an evocative sound scape through pools of modal harmony created by a mix of piano repeating patterns and melodies in the 3 strings. As in all my work the ebb and flow of line is important to the development tensions and resolutions of the piece. The piece is probably suitable for players of the standard of at least Grade 6. It can be performed either by violin viola cello andpiano or by 2 violins cello and piano. - Ed Hughes Commission made possible by Michael McLaren for his daughter Iona McLaren.

The Missa brevis K.140 (Anh. 235d = No. 5) occupies a special position in that it comes close to a pastoral mass a type not otherwise represented in Mozart’s mass oeuvre. As in no other setting of the Ordinary songlike graceful melodies predominate; only the main part of the Credo and the first section of the Agnus Dei stand out with their serious solemn mood. New important evidence for the work’s authenticity has come to light through the discovery of old parts that were written at a time in which a false attribution of another composer’s work to Mozart would not have been possible: a copy at Kremsmünster Monastery which according to Altman Kellner was writtenin Salzburg “ca. (soon after) 1770” and a copy from Heilig Kreuz Kloster Augsburg of which thirteen parts contain autograph markings by W. A. Mozart. The master’s hand is unmistakable. Urtext of the New Mozart Edition Full score performance material (BA4736) and vocal score (BA4736-90) available for sale.

Stuart Johnson presents eight graded studies for Tuba in Bass Clef. These studies provide attractive practice repertoire written specially for the instrument rather than adaptations of music originally written for other instruments which often have unsuitable phrasing for a large wind instrument. They are well graded in order of difficulty and are often used in instrumental grade examinations. Set for the ABRSM Tuba Syllabus Grades 1-5.

Aria Album. Male Roles for High Voice from Handel's Operas Italian opera was at the centre of Handel's output for over 35 years with solo arias constituting one of the most important elements in Baroque opera. Dramatic roles with their various moods and reactions are characterised through arias. A large number of Handel's operas also contain at least one entire scene for two to three voices. These numbers make use not only of similar lyrical or expressive forms of expression such as the arias but also employ contrapuntal elements as found in Handel's chamber music. Based on the Bärenreiter vocal scores these volumes contain some ofHandel's best-known arias duets and trios together with less well-known numbers of equally high musical quality. The arias are arranged chronologically reflecting the order in which the operas were composed. Unbeatable collections of Handel's most beautiful arias and ensembles Musical text based on the Urtext vocal scores of the Halle Handel Edition Detailed foreword (Eng/Ger) by Donald Burrows on Handel's singers and on the arias in the context of the operas Translations of the Italian aria texts (Eng/Ger)

Suite for Orchestra- In 1918 Gabriel Fauré then 73 years old received a commission from Prince Albert I of Monaco to write stage music invoking the atmosphere of the commedia dell’arte. The four-movement orchestral suite Op.112 consisting of Ouverture Menuet Gavotte and Pastorale combines previously unpublished parts of this stage music. The Pastorale of 1919 was Fauré’s last composition for orchestra the Ouverture originated in a piece of 1864 for piano duet and the original version of the Gavotte was written for piano as early as 1869. The Op.112 orchestral suite demonstrates how the composer now older and more experienced reworked and improved his earliermusic. This scholarly-critical edition of the four-movement Masques et Bergamasques Op.112 is based on Gabriel Fauré The Complete Works Volume IV/2. Heilig-Messe- Bernard of Offida 1604–1694 was a Capuchin monk whose saintly life and devotion to the sick and poor caused him to be beatified by Pope Pius VI on 19 May 1795. St. Bernard’s name day falls on the 11th of September (a Saturday in 1797) and it is generally thought that Haydn combined doing honour to the Capuchin monk with the production of a new Mass for his patron the day thereafter. Apparently later performances in Eisenstadt added horns to double the trumpets in the tuttis and – just as in the previous Mass – the clarinet parts were enlarged; it is almost certain that the new clarinet parts are either by Haydn or (shall we say) “supervised” by him. As inthe Mass in Time of War conductors have the choice of two orchestrations: with or without doubling horns and with or without the supplementary clarinet parts. The Heiligmesse has always been one of Haydn’s most admired works. Its dignity its strength (we draw special attention to the extraordinary “Gratias” with its brilliant contrapuntal writing) the subdued orchestral grandeur to which the B-flat trumpets contribute a silvery but unmartial weight – all these have made it one of Haydn’s most serious and most deeply sensitive church works: its constant popularity in Viennese churches is quite deserved. Urtext from Joseph Haydn Werke Full score (together with Missa Cellensis [Mariazellermesse] Hob.XXII:8; Missa brevis Sti Joannis de Deo [Little Organ Mass] Hob.XXII:7; Missa in Tempore Belli [Mass in Time of War] Hob.XXII:9) available for sale Parts (BA4651) and vocal score (BA4651-90) available for sale
