990 Passagenstudien aus dem symphonischen Repertoire-The selection of difficult passages will serve a double purpose. It will give the Orchestral player an opportunity to practice such passages in preparation for actual performances of the respective work and it offers material for general practice which in variety and scope of its technical problems reaches far beyond any studies written especially for technical practice.

“Appalachian Spring” was composed in 1943-44 as a ballet for Miss Martha Graham on a commission from the Elisabeth Sprague Coolidge Foundation. It was first performed by Miss Graham and her company at the Coolidge Festival in the Libarary of Congress Washington D.C. on October 30 1994.The original scoring called for a chamber ensemble of thirteen instruments. The present arrangement for symphony orchestra was made by the composer in the spring of 1945. It is a condensed version of the ballet retaining all essential features but omitting those sections in which the interest is primarily choreographic. In 1945 “Appalachian Spring” received the Pulitzer Prize for music as well asthe award of the Music Critics Circle of New York for the outstanding theatrical work of the season. Written on commission from dancer/choreographer Martha Graham the music of Appalachian Spring is at once characteristic of Copland's 'Americana' style of the late 1930s and the 1940s. It was first performed in May of 1945. This is the study score of the full orchestra version.

Variations Sur Un Thème De Mozart is a piece composed by Reynaldo Hahn and dedicated to Philippe Gaubert. Composed after a tune by Mozart and scored for the Flute this piece features a main theme and a total of seven variations which follow one another. The Flute score features many trills especially in the Variation 2 some fast rhythms and up to 6 flats on the key for the Variation 4. It would require a good mastery of techniques for these challenging parts. Reynaldo Hahn was a naturalised French composer conductor theatre director and singer. Best known as a composer of songs he also wrote many piecesand melodies for different instruments.

A good example of MacMillan's highly resourceful writing for young voices this energetic and enterprising work gives the Latin 'Te Deum' words to a choir of beginner singers and the Lakota chant to a three-part choir of treble/soprano voices. Flute and bells support the choirs without merely doubling and the piano part colourfully echoes the vocal lines. MacMillan's often-used vocal ornamentation is much in evidence here and the piece is challenging but not difficult. It is an ideal vehicle for young singers who will enjoy working through the rhythmic groupings and getting to grips with singing quick scales and tuning triadic passages. Thebeginners (who are also given simpler forms of the ornament) will also find the involvement with their more experienced counterparts exciting and motivating. Helpful notes by Doreen Rao in the front of the score give hints about how to approach teaching this music to young singers in an imaginative and enjoyable way. For treble voices in three parts treble voices in unison flute tubular bells and piano. Latin and English.

Facsimile Of The Draft Score and Paul Sacher'S Annotated Full Score Copy- Béla Bartok's Sonata for Two Pianos and Percussion composed in summer 1937 on a commission from Paul Sacher and premièred in Basel in January 1938 is incontestably one of the supreme creations of modern music. This publication with introductory essays by Felix Meyer Robert W. Wason Laszlo Vikarius and Wolfgang Rathert presents two major handwritten sources for this work from the holdings of the Paul Sacher Foundation: the draft score which offers a fascinating glimpse into the sonata's genesis and a 'whiteprint' of the fair copy which contains additions from Bartok and differs substantially from the definitiveversion at the end of the development section in movement 1. The volume also contains on an enclosed CD the radio recording of 1940 with Bartok and his wife Ditta Pasztory on the piano parts as well as a new recording of the sonata in its 'original' form played by the Bugallo-Williams Piano Duo with percussionists Matthias Wursch and Christian Dierstein.

Rare is the drummer who is both influwntial and essential to a genre but Billy Cobham is just that in regards to jazz and consequently to music in general. He's performed with Miles Davis - displaying his ambidextrous drumming on classic recordings. This play-along package features selections from Spectrum where the individual instrument tracks are remixed so that the musician/student can play along in essence filling in for any key member of the London Jazz Orchestra with whom this project was recorded. The experience is one that Cobham describes as 'accessible yet challenging'.
