Song Cycle-1840 was Schumann ’s famous “year of song” that brought forth over 100 lieder. They included Myrthen op. 25 which he dedicated “to his dear bride” Clara Wieck-Schumann. Besides famous songs such as “Widmung” “Lotosblume” and “Nussbaum” to texts by German poets the collection also saw Schumann venture further afield whether to the Scottish Highlands with settings of Robert Burns or to Italy for the “Venetian Songs” of Thomas Moore. Schumann specialist Kazuko Ozawa has examined the first edition of 1840 and all the manuscript sources. Among the dedicatory autograph copies she has also discovered interestingearly versions of individual songs that are here published in an appendix. Our Urtext edition is rounded off with an extensive history of how Myrthen was composed. This volume is a superlative addition to G. Henle Verlag’s series of Robert Schumann ’s song cycles.

Composer Orlando Gibbons was the leading English composer of his time the late 16th and early 17th century. This five-Voice SSATB madrigal is the best known of his many madrigals and remains compellingly beautiful. The sheet music also includes A Catch on Tobacco by theologian philosopher and composer Dr Henry Aldrich. It dates from 1685 when the composer was Dean of Christ Church Oxford and widely known among his contemporaries as a convivial soul who among his writings created a Latin epigramme listing five reasons for drinking. The performance notes stipulate that the round is to be sung by four men while smoking their pipes.

Two of Joseph Haydn’s three concertos for horn and orchestra have been lost while two further horn concertos have often been mistakenly ascribed to him. Haydn’s sole surviving horn concerto whose authenticity is not in doubt is this one in D major Hob. Vlld:3. Our Urtext edition is based on the Haydn Complete Edition and offers two solo parts: that in D follows Haydn’s autograph while we also supply a part for the modern horn in F. Solo cadenzas are provided for all three movements. The cadenzas printed in the enclosed horn parts are by horn player Johannes Ritzkowsky as far as possible they exploit the limited possibilities offered by the natural horn of Haydn’s own time. They should not cause today’s horn players any great problems and will be a welcome bonus.

Three Songs To Sonnets By Shakespeare-Ed Hughes ' Against That Time - Three Songs To Sonnets By Shakespeare for Mezzo Soprano Viola and Piano. ' Against That Time...Against My Love is a song cycle comprising of three related settings of Shakespeare sonnets(numbers 49 63 and 126). The sonnets are drawn from a collection of 154 of William Shakespeare's poems on love beauty and mortality first published together in 1609. The three sonnets chosen for this sequence meditate particularly on the effect of time upon the appearance of the beloved. In setting these extraordinary lines I let their rhythms permeate the melodic writing for the singer. The viola and piano act as a kind of echo chamber for the poet's very directand intimate thoughts. The poems seem both timeless and modern in attitude and perceptions; the music's harmonies though often tonally clear are occasionally fractured and in tension like the many images in thesepoignant texts. It was not his large piano sonatas but rather his short characteristic pieces that established Franz Schubert’s fame. Like his art songs they too are full of spontaneous lyrical inspiration. The two greatly charming Scherzi D. 593 presumably composed already in 1817 stand at the threshold of Schubert’s phase of dance compositions for the piano. The first dance-like graceful Scherzo is in B-flat major. The second more emotional Scherzo in D-flat major has a Ländler-like A-flat major trio as its middle section. The preface and critical report provide information on the source situation of this accurate Urtext edition.

This book is an attempt to capture the highlights of twenty-eight years of composing. Each of these 32 compositions is an expression and as such -- an exposure of a genuine part of myself which I present within the framework of jazz: my beloved art form. When I listen to this music I hear shades of my early classical and rock influences. It also brings to my mind my birth place a small neighborhood outside of Haifa Israel. I really hope that you will listen to these pieces come alive on my CDs All The Way To Sendai. This book is an attempt to capture the highlights of twenty-eight years of composing.
