Opéra comique in four acts-“Carmen” is one of the most frequently performed operas in the world and the genesis of the work is exceptionally well documented. In spite of this none of the editions published after the composer’s death correspond to his intentions. Now Didion’s edition of which a piano reduction (ED 7965) has already been published at last reproduces the work as intended by Bizet. This new edition of the score draws on detailed study of sources not previously used. With Online Audio-The two southern-most counties in Ireland Cork and Kerry have legendary music and dance traditions. On the border of these two counties a rural area called Sliabh Luachra is especially well-known for its fiddle tunes and itinerant fiddle teachers. When speaking of this area's fiddle music some describe a special lilt or backbeat or they talk about the special role of set dances but the most often-expressed quality relates to the frequent use of slides and polkas. This book features transcriptions of 107 tunes as played by three of the region's most distinguished fiddlers: Padraig O'Keeffe Denis Murphy and Connie O'Connell. Each fiddler is profiled followed by acollection of meticulously transcribed tunes and annotations. Includes access to online audio of 30 of these tunes played solo by Connie O'Connell. Passion Music continues the fusion of jazz and choral music so successfully blended in Will Todd's Mass in Blue . The structure highlights different points in the Passion story beginning with a new setting of 'Greater love has no man' and including an evocative Stabat Mater a movement focusing on the seven last words of Christ and a setting of 'Were you there when they crucified my Lord?'. While some sections are reflective Todd also makes full use of his understanding of energetic jazz and gospel. The vocal soloist is given plenty of expressive freedom singing both with the choir and independently to achieve the characteristic jazz-soulstyle. The seven-piece jazz accompaniment which is presented in the vocal score as a piano reduction for rehearsal only completes the ensemble. The full score and set of parts for the jazz accompaniment are available on sale and hire. A complete backing track and individual rehearsal tracks for the vocal parts are also available to download.

David Bednall 's Tota Pulchra Es for SSATB unaccompanied. This simple and exquisite miniature keeps the text the fourth-century Latin Hymn to the Virgin Mary at the fore with instructions from the composer to accent the melodic lines according to word stress rather than position in the bar. The musical style is a fusion of old and new with plainchant-like melodies and tonality set against expressively dissonant contemporary harmonies. Tota pulchra est was recorded by The Epiphoni Consort on the CD David Bednall: Sudden Light (Delphian DCD34189)

Song For The Duke Of Gloucester's Birthday 1695 (Full Score)- Henry Purcell (1659-1695) held numerous appointments at the Royal court and Westminster Abbey and is considered by many to be the greatest ever English-born composer. His prolific work covered all fields: orchestral ecclesiastical operatic theatrical incidental and chamber music were all enriched by his output. One of Purcell ’s last pieces Who Can From Joy Refrain? (Z 342) was written for the 6th birthday of Prince William Duke of Gloucester in June 1695. The Prince was said to enjoy the brash tone of the Trumpet so the prominent Trumpet part was written especially for him. Unusually Purcell also made use of therecently-introduced Oboe and Bassoon. A real asset to the catalogue A Song For The Duke Of Gloucester's Birthday showcases the very best of Purcell’s genius.

Nico Muhly 's Third Service (Magnificat & Nunc Dimittis) is a work for SATB Choir and Organ Accompaniment. Commissioned by the Master and Fellows of St John's College Cambridge it was first performed by St John's College Choir on 29th May 2016. A full performance lasts around 7.5 minutes. 'The American composer Nico Muhly has often spoken of his love of the early English church music which he sang as a choirboy and his recent choral works include a Third Service composed for St John's College Cambridge. (Given his love of music by Thomas Weelkes we can perhaps hope for at least six more.) This setting though has nothing to do with the early English repertoire and is in a bold modern idiom more akin to Tippett's famous setting for St. John's. The Organ plays a varied and independent role throughout sometimes with dynamics that are quite different to those in the voice parts. The Organ part is sometimes written on two staves without further comment and it's not entirely clear what is required between pages 3 and 4 where three staves become two. The vocal parts include some modest vocal effects and there are Soprano and Alto solos in the Nunc dmittis. The Gloria of the Nunc is a varied repeat of the Magnificat Gloria together with a subtly reworked conclusion to match the general mood of the movement. - Geoffrey Webber Choir & Organ Magazine
