For Isang Yun String Quartet No. 3 from 1959 marked the beginning of his European creative phase and of his official canon of works. Now it is possible to encounter Yun's early works from his Korean period in the form of his String Quartet No. 1 (1955). Three important 10-minute movements containing references not only to Asia but also to Ravel Bartok and Eastern European folk music and having an idiosyncratic structure: Yun lines up forms and figures makes them emerge from each other in a contrasting manner and assembles them into a mosaic-like whole seeking for integration laying down his material in layer upon layer and ending themovements with a rhythmic unison. Country Scenes takes us back to the early English settlements on the American east coast. The opening section Daybreak depicts daybreak in a small village where people go about their daily business. This edition contains all of Janá ek ’s works for Violin and Piano - the Sonata as well as the Romance and Dumka composed while he was still a student. Though probably written as early as 1914 Janá ek ’s Sonata for Violin and Piano was revised several times before finally appearing in a definitive version in 1922. This new edition of the Sonata and the Romance is based on the Complete Critical Edition of the Works of Leoš Janá ek (Vol. E/1) with a clearer notation to optimise readability. For the Dumka the editor has drawn on the sole autograph source the Violin part (still considered lost when the above mentioned Complete Edition volume waspublished) and the revised version contained therein. Unlike the first edition it also contains Janá ek ’s detailed dynamic markings. Newly engraved edition with notation adapted to conform with modern usage. Philipp Maintz was born in Aachen Germany in 1977. He received his first composition lessons from Michael Reudenbach. He studied composition with Robert HP Platz in Maastricht from 1997-2003 graduating with distinction followed by a further degree in composition and electronic music with Karlheinz Essl at the Bruckner Conservatory in Linz. He has received scholarships and invitations from institutions including the Electronic Studio at the University of Liège the International Summer Courses for New Music in Darmstadt IRCAM Paris and the North Rhine-Westphalia Ministry of Culture an Artist’s Scholarship from Lower Saxony for the Künstlerhof Schreyahn and otherhonours: the Supportive Prize from the Ernst von Siemens Music Foundation in 2005 a scholarship from the Wilfried Steinbrenner Foundation in 2006 and a German Government Scholarship to study at the Cité Internationale des Arts Paris in 2007 Scholarship awarded by the German Minister of Culture for a one-year stay at the German Academy Rome Villa Massimo (2010). His compositions have been performed at festivals including the International Gaudeamus Music Week Amsterdam agora-festival Paris ars nova (SWR) International Summer Courses for New Music in Darmstadt Wittener Tage für Neue Kammermusik musica (Strasbourg) Wien Modern Hear&Now London and the Salzburg Festival.

To quote the composer: “This work was commissioned by the violist Nicolas Corti and the guitarist Hans Jonkers to whom I am grateful for our close collaboration in elaborating the guitar part. The duet is one of my pieces whose form is comparable to a walk through a rich landscape from point A to point B.” (Rudolf Kelterborn). Navigation Inn was originally written for brass band to celebrate one of the most famous events of the brass band calendar - the Whit Friday marches. The Navigation Inn is a pub which is a popular meeting place for bandsmen. This version for concert band is in the style of a traditional contest style march and will bring a great sense of tradition to all concerts.
