This short processional was designed to be played as a concert opener but can equally be used as a sort of extended fanfare at presentations graduation ceremonies and similar occasions. Its title evokes the noble grandeur of the university buildings in the English town of Cambridge where ?pomp and circumstance? are still a normal part of life.A fanfare-like passage opens and closes the work and sandwiches a more legato central section.

Fantasy in D minor (No. 1) was written in 1957 by one of the most effectual composers of the twentieth century Miloslav Kabela (1908-1979) on the initiative of the prominent Czech organist Ji í Reinberger (1914-1977). It was the composer's first work for solo organ and he later confessed that … my love of the organ began with this Fantasy and did not end. He composed Fantasy in D minor in the same year that he completed his cult classics Mysterium asu (Mystery of Time) and Symphony No. 3 (with organ) and the piece soon became a staple of organ repertoire at home andabroad. The following year he composed Fantasy in G minor (No. 2) by commission for the 1st International Organ Competition of Prague Spring 1958. Although Kabela joined both fantasies into one opus 32 they had as yet been published separately. The present edition is the first to include the whole of Op. 32 in one volume. Composed for the Paris Conservatoire contest this piece lasts approximately seven minutes and can be played by upper-intermediate and above level players . This three-movement work by the Swiss composer Etienne Crausaz reflects three true stories and fascinating legends from the Middle Ages. The first movement tells the dramatic story of the ‘witch’ Catherine ‘Catillon’ Repond (1662-1731). She was the last woman ever to be executed for sorcery. In the second movement the famous court jester Girard Chalamala occupies centre stage. This jester the last one at the castle of Count Greyerz could make everyone laugh. The third movement tells the story of Count Michael. He went down in history as a spendthrift bon-vivant. His burden of debt became so high that he did a moonlight flit and never came back!

Along with Symphonies Nos. 79 and 81 Haydn’s D-minor Symphony Hob. I:80 belongs to a set of symphonies that he completed in late 1784. He wrote them for his employer Prince Nikolaus Esterházy his task being to entertain the prince with new music. The symphonies had to be suitable for the twenty-five to thirty musicians who were in the prince’s orchestra. Continuing the cooperation between Bärenreiter and the G. Henle publishing company regarding Haydn’s large choral works operas and symphonies this edition is based on the G. Henle Complete Edition of the “Works of Joseph Haydn”. Bärenreiter has already published the complete performance material forseveral “Sturm und Drang” symphonies and all the London and Paris symphonies.

(The Trumpet Voluntary)-Jeremiah Clarke (c. 1674-1707) belongs to the generation of English composers following that of Henry Purcell. Not much is known about his early life but by 1685 he was a chorister of the Chapel Royal a group of liturgical musicians attached to the court. He held the post of organist at Winchester College from 1692 but later returned to London as Master of the Choristers at St Paul’s Cathedral. The Prince of Denmark’s March is perhaps his best-known work and was originally written for harpsichord although Clarke later included it in a collection of pieces for wind instruments.

The Battell was written during the late 14th Century when England was in a mood of national celebration after victory over the Spanish and French Armadas.The movement which Byrd called Marche Before The Battell became known as The Earl of Oxford?s Marchand it appears with that title in an early manuscript copy of the Fitzwilliam Virginal Book.Written while Byrd was at the height of his powers it still stirs the soul to this day. A perfect opener for your concert performances.
