Quelle est cette odeur agreable-‘Whence is that Goodly Fragrance Flowing?’ is the first line of an old French Christmas song that originated in the 17th century. In 1728 John Gay used this joyous and markedly festive melody that honours Jesus Christ and His miraculous birth in his Beggar’s Opera . Philip Sparke has given this melody a new lease of life with his charming and imaginative arrangement for the Christmas season.

The edition also contains a facsimile showing the original ending of thethird movement as well as an informative foreword (Ger/Eng) and a critical commentary (Eng). All of Bach ’s six authenticated motets were written between 1723 and 1727 for St Thomas’ Church Leipzig where Bach was appointed as director of music in 1723. During this period Bach composed most of his cantatas and it seems likely that for ordinary Sunday services he used existing motets from the seventeenth century tradition reserving his own motet compositions for special occasions. Four of his six motets were written for the funeral services of prominent members of the St Thomas’ congregation. Jesu Meine Freude (BWV 227) the longest most musically complex and earliest of the six was written in 1723 for the funeralof Johanna Maria Käsin the wife of Leipzig’s postmaster. Jesu Meine Freude BWV 227 is a beautifully constructed motet for five-part mixed choir by J.S. Bach . This Urtext edition provides you with a clear and accurate realisation of the composer’s original intentions and includes thoroughly detailed editorial markings and suggestions as edited by Konrad Ameln. Cathedrals have always appealed to the imagination. Hundreds of years of manpower have been invested in their building and it is not for nothing that today they represent imposing symbols of architecture and history. The cathedral is also a great source of inspiration for compositions drawing on a full palette of acoustic echo effects Gregorian melodies and organ based choral themes. The work “ Catedrals” opens with a five tone motif using double tonguing which resonates through space. Then comes a Gregorian antiphonal theme “Salve Regina” which is heard in the euphonium and later combines with the opening motif. The quicker passage that follows is basedentirely on the intervals in the motif which by now has added rhythmic variations and develops in different forms including a fugue. The work then builds towards its first climax from which unusual muted sounds emerge creating an atmosphere shrouded in mystery.Gradually more melodious fragments are added to the Gregorian antiphonal theme which develops into an expansive choral emulating the organ and which rises above the sound mass. The work grows more powerful and brilliant in sound until it culminates in a short and explosive finale wherein elements from the whole work come together.

In this concert setting the voices are used as a means to create a meditative dwelling for prayer. The low voices drone (using nasal resonance) to symbolize a sense of eternity suspended. The isolated duet figures in the higher voices color the text bringing certain verses to the foreground. All voices climax in extended adoration and work harmonically to create the sensation of suspended awe. The closing moment sreturn to a meditative prayer-like state yet suggest that something has transformed since the beginning of the piece or perhaps that the piece was only a continuation.Francisco J.
