Between 1996 and 2000 Bärenreiter published scholarly-critical editions of Beethoven 's Nine Symphonies edited by the first class musicologist Jonathan Del Mar. The editorial process was a huge undertaking because of the complex source situation regarding Beethoven 's Symphonies culminating in the Choral Symphony (No.9) which came down to the publisher in nearly 20 different sources. So it was not surprising that Bärenreiter's new Urtext edition caused a considerable stir in the music world. Since publication Del Mar's edition enjoys the unabashed praise of conductors performers and critics alike and has become the most widely used publication ofthe Beethoven Symphonies which can be heard not only every day in concert halls but also on CD recordings by John Eliot Gardiner David Zinman Jos van Immerseel and Claudio Abbado. The variation form is one of the oldest and most fundamental forms of musical technique. Franco Cesarini has chosen the well known French folk melody Sur le pont d'Avignon as the basis for this piece. The piece begins with a short introduction followed by the exposition and ten lively and contrasting variations. The final reminder of the main theme also included references to the famous French nursery songs J'ai du bon tabac and Alouette which bring the work to an expressive and brilliant close.

One of Leos Janacek 's last chamber music works was written in the autumn of 1926 at the suggestion of the pianist Otakar Hollmann (1894-1967) an invalid from the First World War. Like his contemporary Paul Wittgenstein Hollmann urged composers to write something for Piano left hand; he succeeded in winning over Bohuslav Martinu Erwin Schulhoff and Janacek to do this. Janacek did not want as he put it to compose a dance for one leg but finally wrote a four-movement work with associations to military music scored for Piano Flute (Piccolo) two Trumpets three Trombones (preferably valveTrombones because of the fast passages) and a tenor Tuba. The French Horn was allowed by the composer to substitute the Tuba. The Capriccio was premiered by Otakar Hollmann and members of the Czech Philharmonic in Prague on 2 March 1928 in the presence of the enthusiastic composer.
