Originating on the Liberian Peninsula, the breed is known as the Puro Sangue Lusitano in Portugal today. This horse was bred to be a war horse and thier courage and agility made them well - suited to be the mounts of bull fighters. In 1956, riding instructor Harry De Leyer puchased a 7 year old gelding for 80 dollars as he was being loaded into a van for the slaughterhouse.
