Taught by Cory Seznec-Some time ago Cory began delving fairly deeply into the rich repertoire that is African-American Spirituals. Listening to the jubilee singers of yore and some of the terrific recordings by Alan Lomax of vocal groups spurred him to find old hymnals and songbooks in order to arrange tunes for the guitar. Give Me Jesus is a soulful number that ended up being somewhat inspired by the playing of John Fahey with down tempo strumming followed by more classic alternate bass picking. Roll De Ol' Chariot Along has a rollicking syncopated feel that never really stays in one place bouncing up and down the neck à la Revered Gary Davis. Lift Every Voice and Sing aka the Black National Anthem has a beautiful harmonically rich feel and the 6/8 tempo allows the guitarist a fair amount of room in which to maneuver. Also included is a spirited version of This Train Is Bound For Glory originally inspired by Big Bill Broonzy’s walking bass line an arrangement of A Closer Walk With Thee that taps into the feel of a New Orleans brass band funeral procession and a heavily swung and syncopated take on Rev. Thomas A. Dorsey’s heart-wrenching piece Precious Lord Take My Hand. Titles include: Give Me Jesus Precious Lord Take My Hand Lift Every Voice And Sing Roll De Ol’ Chariot Along A Closer Walk With Thee This Train Is Bound For Glory

As the Country Blues began to be recorded in the mid-1920s it soon became apparent that the music was being played and appreciated not only by African-American musicians and audiences but by white musicians and audiences as well. Many of these white musicians played with and learned from black musicians for even in the Jim Crow Era there was always a good deal of musical interaction and exchange. So it is that the term 'Hillbilly Blues' can be used to describe the music made by white musicians of that era in the Country Blues style. Included on this DVD are songs from Clarence Greene known mostly as a fiddler but an ace guitarist Dick Justice who in his one dayin the recording studio waxed ten masterful performances Frank Hutchison who excelled at lap slide harmonica on a rack and conventional blues picking Sam McGee a banjo and guitar master who went on to star on the Grand Ole Opry Hobart Smith a musical powerhouse Maybelle Carter a rocksteady and beautifully lyrical player who may have been the most influential of the bunch and Emry Arthur a soulful singer and player who recorded one of the earliest versions of Man Of Constant Sorrow. Jody Stecher has long been America’s least generic flatpicker. From the teenage hotshot who won the 1966 World’s Champion Flatpicking Cup at Union Grove North Carolina to the mature and reflective artist who was twice Grammynominated in the 1990s Jody has always played his own style. Here he presents the technical nuts and bolts for you to make your own personal style. This lesson is both a roadmap of Jody’s development as a flatpickingguitarist of mostly American vernacular music and a guide to how any flatpicker can expand their expressive technique. Think of it as “Flatpicking According to Jody”. It’s a graded course starting with basics in whichthe technical relationship between fingerpicking and flatpicking is made clear. The first few pieces are great songs with memorable melodies but minimal fingering so that right hand fundamentals can be mastered. Witheach new tune more techniques are introduced and more of the fingerboard is used both horizontally and vertically. The second half of the lesson is purely instrumental music and the tunes are more complex. Titlesinclude: Carter’s Blues It’s Hard To Love I Got A Bulldog Leake County Blues Arkansas Traveler The Dawn and The Ship in Full Sail.
