The idea behind the Symphony is the story of Yggdrasil The Tree of Life from the Old Norse mythology. The Ash-tree reaches all the way into the sky and has three roots each growing into three different places. One root grows into the Land of Hel (Hel is the goddess of Hell) called Helheim another into the Land of Frost- Giants called Jotunheim and one root grows into the Land of men called Asgard . And the Ash-tree reaches into the sky. In the crown of the tree lives a squirrel which moves fast around the tree and spreads gossip both between the three roots and between three roots and the crown of the tree. The Edda is a large collection of Old Norse poems collected in the 12th Century by the Icelandic poet and historian Snorri Sturluson. French composer and musicologist José Berghmans (1921-1992) studied at the Brussels Conservatory and at the Paris Conservatoire under Olivier Messiaen . His La Femme A Barbe remains popular within the Trombone repertoire. Berghmans was a significant composer of film music and therefore much of his music was dramatic and expressive. La Femme A Barbe comes from Berghmans' Fairground Tables. La Femme A Barbe is dramatic and expressive containing much variation in articulation rhythm range tonality and performancedirections amongst other aspects. For all intermediate to advanced trombonists Berghmans' La Femme A Barbe provides an exciting addition to the repertoire.

This symphony is the most important work of Spanish composer Teo Aparicio-Barberán. The 2002 International Contest for Bands Ciudad de Valencia one of the most prestigious competitions in Europe marked its first public performance. Throughout the work which consists of three movements the composer uses a modern musical vocabulary and combines strong melodic instrumentation with impressive rhythmic passages. Asgard is based on a Scandinavian romantic narrative in the light of the ancient Germanic Sagas.…where the flowery landscape remains in that sweet-scented season where spring is always on the brink of summer. Its fields resemble smooth green lawns(maintained by the grazing red cattle and woolly sheep) and its forests are home to deer and songbirds. The area is protected by an unsurmountable stone wall and is impossible to enter except by the grace of Odin. It is here at High Nest in Val-hall that Odin sits on his throne and surveys all those in his dominion.

This series aims to present the significant concert band works of Philip Sparke in a format that enables any player to study their music whether or not they get the chance to play these pieces with their own band.

Saxophone Mib - Ou Soprano Ou Tenor- Born in 1948 Claude-Henry Joubert studied at the Paris Conservatoire where he won many prizes. His career has led him to become Director of the Orleans Conservatory as well as teaching at other institutions. His compositional output is also substantial with Mademoiselle Coquelicot being a delightful addition to the Saxophone repertoire. The preface of Mademoiselle Coquelicot written by Michel Mériot states that the piece fills a vital gap as an necessary exam and audition work for many schools and other institutions. Adaptable to Alto Tenor or SopranoSaxophones Mademoiselle Coquelicot is suitable to grade two standard saxophonists. With a typical performance lasting about 2 minutes and 15 seconds Joubert 's work contains many appealing musical features. For all aspiring saxophonists Mademoiselle Coquelicot is a sublime addition to the repertoire.

Harlequin was commissioned by and is dedicated to euphonium virtuoso David Childs. The piece takes as its inspiration the happy and sad masks which symbolise the Commedia dell?Arte (which features Harlequin as one of its main characters) and comprises two movements a slow modal ballad followed by a frenetic faster movement. A fantastic showpiece for euphonium and band.

No group of works in Johann Sebastian Bach ’s output is as wide-ranging as the cantatas.
