As other albums will be devoted exclusively to operatic and oratorio arias these are generally omitted from the present volumes.Manifestly the selection must be indicative rather than comprehensive or merely exclusive and is essentially practical not personal. Each song is briefly annotated and except where indicated appears in the original key or is set for the voice which it is normally associated.Apart from obvious restrictions the choice has been largely determined by certain positive needs. To provide the singing teacher andstudent alike with a working catalogue as a basis for more specialized research into the varied treasure of the literature of song; to give the festival committees and examination bodies a ready way of governing without unduly restricting the dangerous freedom of choice classes; to present the would-be accompanist with a convenient means of studying the many-sided aspects of the exacting technique; and lastly to offer to all singers whether amateur or professional a practical and logical conspectus of the diversities of lyrical song over a period of some three hundred years. Strong dissonances hint at the turmoil that existed while moments of beauty signify balance arriving at various parts of the universe. for Euphonium and Piano-Harlequin was commissioned by and is dedicated to euphonium virtuoso David Childs. The piece takes as its inspiration the happy and sad masks which symbolise the Commedia dell'Arte (which features Harlequin as one of its main characters) and comprises two movements a slow modal ballad followed by a frenetic faster movement. A fantastic showpiece for any euphonium player.

Suk decided to supplement this obligatory piece with a work inspired by the ancient sacred Bohemian “St. Wenceslas” hymn. The hymn’s message – a plea for the well-being of the Czech people directed at their patron saint – was immediately understood by the audience. The Bohemian String Quartet performed this single-movement Meditation for the first time on 27 September 1914; the premiere of the version for string orchestra followed on 22 November 1914 played by the Czech Philharmonic. That same year thepiece was published by Fr. A. Urbánek together with arrangements for piano and organ. This first Urtext edition prepared by the Suk scholar Zdenek Nouza is published in two scorings one for string quartet (BA 9583; study score TP 583) and another for string orchestra (BA 9584). As the Saxophone is commonly associated with the jazz style classical music for the instrument had always been lacking so when Paul Bonneau composed his Caprice en forme de Valse for solo Saxophone in 1950 it was well-received by performers and listeners of the genre. Bonneau 's composing was highly versatile ranging from over fifty film scores operettas songs and other pieces for Saxophone including a concerto. Caprice en forme de Valse however was particularly acclaimed for having no accompaniment and for its flexibility to be performed on all members of the Saxophone family. It containstypically French characteristics including chromaticism and difficult technical passages. All these elements combine to make for an enjoyable and challenging piece for saxophonists.

Philip Sparke has taken this traditional melody and produced an attractive arrangement for fanfare band. The piece is ideal for use in Christmas concerts and is guaranteed to get everyone’s toes tapping - players and audience alike.

Australian born Nicolas-Charles Bochsa (1789-1856) studied at the Paris Conservatoire before embarking upon a career as a harpist and composer. His Celebrated Studies for Harp is well-informed and essential to progression on the instrument. The first suite comprises twenty studies which focus on fingering countermelodies rhythms intervals chords articulation phrasing chromaticism dynamics and performance directions among other musical aspects. Celebrated Studies for Harp by Nicolas-Charles Bochsa is essential to accompany all advanced Harp studies.

Dance from The Danserye Suite-Tylman Susato (approximately 1500-1561) was an accomplished Flemish composer musician and music publisher. He composed numerous works and published several collections among them Danserye (1551) the third volume of his Musyckboexken which contained his own four-voice airs and dances. Several of these were inspired by traditional Flemish airs. Renaissance scholar Manu Mellaerts has created a graceful arrangement of the most famous pieces from La Mourisque.

The Hanover Wind Symphony New Jersey USA was founded in 1984 by its conductor Peter Boor. He commissioned HANOVER FESTIVAL to celebrate the band’s 15th Birthday and the first performance took place on October 27th 1999. The piece starts with a solemn brass fanfare. Woodwinds join in and the music subsides into an expressive chorale. A climax is reached and the fanfare returns. Trumpets introduce an explosive vivo section characterised by an energetic theme from the horns and low clarinets. A bridge passage with strong brass chords leads to a playful section that introduces a legato central theme under woodwind figures. This is taken up by the full band the playfulmusic returns and the original horn tune is reintroduced. Finally the opening fanfare returns this time accompanied by music from the vivo section until a fast and furious coda closes the work.

In Shchedryk Leontovych added his own the lyrics which concern the legend claiming that when Jesus was born all the bells on earth started ringing in his honour.The tune has since been the inspiration of at least four different Christmas carols but Philip Sparke has sourced the originalUkrainian melody to create this stirring arrangement.
