Britten once referred to this work as his 'real Opus 1' as the themes in the work are themes from his childhood. At school he was expelled for a 'shocking' essay he had written in which he had opposed the practice of blood sports and suggested that the brutal effect of them was in fact a cause of war. In 1892 Josef Suk (1874-1935) a mere 18 years of age contributed his piece Melody to a collection of simple works for Violin (for two three or four Violins and for Violin with Piano accompaniment) called The Young Violinist published by the Prague-based firm Jos. R. Vilimek (several books issued per year). This short charming and technically undemanding piece for young violinists which is possibly more familiar to Czech audiences in arrangements for other combinations of instruments (Violin and Piano or solo Piano) was published once again in its original version for two Violins to mark the 70th anniversary of Suk 's death(2005). The whereabouts of the autograph of this work is unknown; the editor of the new edition Zdenek Nouza based his revisions on the original carefully prepared edition from 1892. The bowings are Suk 's own (he was an excellent violinist) but no fingerings have been added since the piece can be played by violinists of varying technical proficiency; first position alone would suffice however a fuller richer sound would be gained with greater mastery of the instrument.

from Hymn of the Highlands - for Bb Piccolo Trumpet (or Eb Cornet/Trumpet) Solo-The seven-movement suite for brass band Hymn of the Highlands was commissioned by David King and the Yorkshire Building Society Band and provides a series of themed movements which can act as a half-concert featuring a band’s soloists. Flowerdale is one of the solo movements. This solo is also available with piano accompaniment edition no. AMP 285.

The Celtic poem The Voyage of Bran was the inspiration for this fantasy work by Bert Appermont. The subject of this composition is Febal who - together with his companions - travels to the ‘otherworld’ also known as the Island of the Blessed where he finds nothing but sun and prosperity. The sections called Isle of Joy Land of the Women and The Feast intermingle with Song of the Otherworld which acts as a sort of leitmotif.

He titled its three movements “Das Lebewohl” (The Farewell) “Die Abwesenheit” (The Absence) and “Das Wiedersehn” (The Return) in reference to the hasty departure of his good friend and patron Archduke Rudolph of Austria who fled Vienna with the imperial family on 4 May 1809 to escape Napoleon’s approaching troops. Beethoven referred to op. 81a as a “characteristic sonata” not in the sense that it had an underlying programme but because it lent musical expression to his feelings. He reacted angrily when his publisher printed French translations of its title and movement headings. Thishowever did not prevent op. 81a from becoming widely known by its French name “Les Adieux”.Jonathan Del Mar worldwide authority for Beethoven’s instrumental music offers a reliable musical text on the basis of the most recent research. Carl Reinecke (1824-1910) was a highly respected German pianist composer and conductor. During his lifetime he was known as the standard-setting performer of Mozart's Piano works and was also the earliest-born pianist to be recorded in any format having made recordings in 1904 at the age of 80. His 6 Miniatur-Sonatinen (6 Miniature Sonatinas Op. 136) were written in 1875. They form a collection of 6 exquisitely charming little pieces for solo Piano each comprising three or four movements. Any movement would make a suitable first performance piece for the beginner-intermediate pianist while each complete Sonatina could bethe perfect piece for a junior recital. Whatever they are used for these versatile and enjoyable miniatures are sure to meet with approval from both audience and performer alike.
