French composer and conductor Henri Tomasi (1901-1971) published Le Tombeau De Mireille in 1959. As with his other compositions Le Tombeau De Mireille for Galoubet (Pipe) Piccolo or Oboe with Tambourine Toneless Snare Drum or Piano was well-received by audiences. Tomasi was born in Marseille but his Father and Mother were originally from La Casinca in Corsica. Despite being pressured into musical studies by his parents Tomasi dreamed of becoming a sailor and during the summer he stayed with his Grandmother in Corsica where he learnt traditional Corsican songs. However in1921 he began his studies at the Paris Conservatoire and went on to become a high profile composer and conductor. Tomasi did not forget his Corsican routes often incorporating themes of the songs he had learnt during the summers with his Grandmother in to his compositions. Le Tombeau De Mireille is a highly unusual and modern work not only in instrumentation but in its use of varying time signatures complex rhythms and a range of performance directions. The composition exploits tonality rhythm and structure amongst other aspects. However this Tomasi piece suitable for advanced instrumentalists provides an exciting alternative addition to the ensemble repertoire.

Elegia is a small piece for Oboe and Piano accompaniment by Nino Rota . Really lyrical its medium difficulty will enable intermediate players to execute it for a recital or for a contest. This lovely work is quite slow nostalgic at some points and ends up on a perfect harmony between the two instruments. Nino Rota (1911-1979) is an Italian composer and conductor particularly known for his works on film music. He also composed 5 ballets 10 orchestras as well as numerous music chamber works including a string concerto.

To this day Eugène Bozza (1905-1991) remains one of the most prolific composers for wind instruments despite being a violinist himself. His Pièce Brève for solo Saxophone is no exception to the composer's success. During his studies at the Paris Conservatoire Bozza won prizes for Violin conducting and composition as well as the Grand Prix de Rome. He then conducted the orchestra of the Opéra-Comique and became Head of the Conservatoire in Valenciennes whilst remaining a prominent composer. Composed in 1955 Bozza 's PièceBrève is to be played on the Alto Saxophone and is a virtuosic work addressing advanced features including complex rhythms chromaticism a wide range and articulation. As music educationalist Paul Griffiths has written of Bozza 's compositions 'his works reveal melodic fluency elegance of structure and a consistently sensitive concern of instrumental capabilities.'

French composer and teacher Darius Milhaud (1892-1974) was a prolific composer of the 20th century as a member of 'Les Six'. His compositions remain highly regarded Jacob's Dreams being no exception. Milhaud 's compositions are influenced by jazz and polytonality as exemplified in Jacob's Dreams. Composed in 1949 Jacob's Dreams is a dance suite written for Oboe Violin Viola Cello and Double Bass. It is an alternative exciting suite based on the dreams of Jacob in the Bible and made up of five movements; 1) Jacob's Pillow 2) The first dream (the angel's ladder) 3) Prophecy 4) Second dream(fight with the dark angel and benediction) and 5) Israel (Hymn). Milhaud makes use of variation in articulation complex rhythms chromaticism accidentals harmonics altering tempos variation in dynamics and a wide tessitura amongst other aspects. Milhaud 's Jacob's Dream is essential to all advanced ensembles seeking modern and exciting repertoire.

This grand work contains four contrasting movements. The first movement Prelude takes the form of an overture: it raises the curtains and marks the beginning of the piece. The brilliant motifs of the opening are contrasted by a calmer and more lyrical central section after which the triumphant opening returns for the movement’s end. The second movement Meditation explores the intimate sounds of the oboe as well as those of the flute and French horn backed by a rich orchestral accompaniment. The third movement presents a more upbeat Procession but not a Procession of the Nobles as written by Rimsky-Korsakov. Quite the opposite Procession resembles a “second line”procession from New Orleans whose up-beat rhythms invite everyone to dance in the streets rather than the measured pacing of a march. Divertimento ends with a Hoedown the tradition American folk dance idiom when the band has the opportunity for both vivacity and virtuosity and may play as fast as it can. It is important to play all four movements with precision clarity and most importantly enthusiasm.

It thus belongs to the last symphonies he wrotebefore his journeys to England in 1791-92 and 1794-95. Continuing the collaboration between Barenreiter and the G. Henle publishing company regarding Haydns large-scale choral works operas and symphonies this edition is based on the G. Henle Complete Edition of the Works of Joseph Haydn. With SymphonyNo. 90 Barenreiter has now published the complete performance material for all the symphonies from Nos. 82 to 104 as well as several Sturm und Drang symphonies.
