In his collections of Impromptus and Moments musicaux Franz Schubert impressively showed at the end of his life how a lyrical songlike form can be rendered on the piano. In spite of their simplicity his popular Impromptus op. 90 for example prove themselves to be consummate works of art and number among the most beloved pieces of Romantic piano music. The third Impromptu of op. 90 an Andante in G-flat major is a mysterious reverie in pianissimo. A peaceful melody hovers over a murmuring accompaniment of eighth-note triplets while the harmonies change very gently. This Urtext edition provides the work as a separate edition in the original key. To make it easier to play other editions often transpose it into G major which however diminishes the distinctive colour of this piece. ‘Madroños’ is the Spanish word for ‘arbutus’ a small tree native to Spain that fruits and flowers simultaneously.Twentieth century Spanish composer conductor and critic Federico Moreno Torroba produced many zarzuelas and other works but it was his early friendship with master Guitarist Andrés Segovia that inspired him to produce what is considered his best work a host of pieces or solo Guitar. This one Madroños was published in 1954 and was performed and recorded by Segovia. It displays Torroba’s commitment to Spanish idioms as he believed that only by embracing Iberian music inspiration would Spanish music receive the international recognition it deserved.

Flight is a virtuoso solo which seeks to investigate many of the various aspects of flying. It attempts to portray the effort of powered flight the ease of gliding and soaring the thrill of rising on natural thermals and the chaotic swirling of rapid descent. Dast Be Dast ('Hand to hand in friendship') was commissioned by Cuatro Puntos a pioneering ensemble of chamber musicians dedicated to global cooperation and peace through the writing and performance of new music worldwide. The piece was written specifically for their violist Kevin Bishop and for Rubab player Samim Zafar a student of the extraordinary Afghanistan National Institute for Music (ANIM) in Kabul. Kevin suggested that the piece should represent the two distinct but equal musical cultures of the performers and as such both players are required to adopt characteristics of each other's traditions both techniques and languages. Dast Be Dast illuminates variousaspects of Afghan and Western music-making with both instruments exploring improvisation alongside notation controlled imitation with spontaneous elaboration and Western tonality within Afghan scales. The piece is based on three Afghan songs each heard clearly in the three movements which are played without a break: I Anar Anar (Pomegranates): a fast song where the two instruments imitate each other gradually becoming more and more elaborate. II Allah Hu (This is God): a meditative movement for solo viola based on a specific interpretation of Allah Hu sung as a lullaby by Veronica Doubleday in 2004.
