This work is a one-movement piece with distinct sections. Beginning with a maestoso opening statement the work then moves directly into a lighter 2/4 section which then leads to a 3/4 section that provides a lyrical rubato interlude back to the maestoso ending.

This engaging and fun arrangement by Philip Lawson will be a treat for all choirs. Accessible and fun to learn it is a welcome addition to any choir's repertoire.

The Spring of the Water of Life is Howard Goodall’s jubilant anthem for SATB voices and organ. The music sets the poetry of Gerard Manley Hopkins and George Herbert (God’s Grandeur and The Flower respectively) as well as words from Revelation culminating in a triumphant finale. A trumpet part is also available for download from fabermusicstore.com. The piece was commissioned by Wilshire Baptist Church in Dallas Texas to mark the 30th anniversary of Senior Pastor George A. Mason. The Choral Signature Series introduces a wealth of new or recently written choral music to choirs in search of fresh repertoire. The series draws in a rich diversity of contemporary composers andincludes both lighter and more challenging works offering a thrilling array of varied styles.

Right from the outset until the very end the speed energy and “drive” of the tuneful music is palpable. It’s abundantly clear why the title “Seatbelts Fastened!” was chosen: just like an airplane this music takes off and neither tempo nor intensity are lost throughout the flight. Descending and ascending scales characterise the most important thematic material and the music explores a variety of different registers through Van der Roost utilising a great deal of different tonalities and metres. Please keep your seatbelts fastened and enjoy the flight!

Despite many newly-composed interpolations ranging from stylistic copies to modern interpretations performing the Gospel text in Bach’s lost St. Mark Passion continues to present many challenges for performers. With his recitations for narrator gamba and cello Peter Uehling has found a way of maintaining the musical flow while nevertheless preserving the fragmentary character of the work. The reduced musical language of the recitations places so to speak bare walls between Bach’s colorful figured “tonal language”. An important point for performance: despite the free tonal harmony the recitations lead convincingly into the opening notes of the chorales. Thecello part comprises also all the other pieces from the St. Mark Passion Carus 31.247.

Korobeiniki is perhaps the best-known Russian folk song in the world. Anyone who played Gameboy in days long past will surely still remember the Tetris melody but perhaps they wouldn’t know that this melody comes from Russia and tells a pretty nocturnal romance which allows some leeway for interpretation … Well – this is Korobeiniki! For this arrangement I was looking for the greatest possible contrast to the Tetris music: a kind of five-part fugue in five verses for five singers: a folk polyphony so to speak which – respectfully but with a twinkle in the eye – turns the contrapuntal art form into an arrangement but at some point degenerates because one singer likes his folksong tune so much that he can’t get enough of it and pushes himself more and more into the foreground … (Ludwig Böhme)

Symphonic poem after a poem by Henri Cazalis-Saint-Saëns was a great admirer of the symphonic poems by Franz Liszt. His own symphonic poem Danse macabre reflects not only his affinity to medieval superstitions but also constitutes a tribute to Liszt’s Totentanz. Danse macabre is based on the eponymous song Saint-Saëns composed in 1872 after Henri Cazalis’ poem. At its premiere the work was not well-received: in fact it was booed possibly due to the diabolic solo violin playing on an E-string that was tuned down to E-flat which the audience might have misinterpreted as being out of tune. However within ten years the work had become so popular that Saint-Saëns quoted some of its musical themes in The Carnival of the Animals. Since the composer’s death Danse macabre is among the works most often mentioned in connection with the theatrical face of death found in popular mortuary cult.
