The “Devil’s Trill” Sonata is the most famous of the violin sonatas of Giuseppe Tartini (1692–1770). In the new scholarly-critical edition it holds many a surprise in store. For the first time all available contemporary sources have been consulted to produce an edition closely approximating Tartini’s lost autograph. The solo part offers several ossia passages and alternative articulation marks and the score have been given an eminently playable realization of the continuo part offering ample scope for improvisation. Also for the first time this edition includes a separate part for violoncello or violone. A detailed preface sheds light on the genesis and subsequentreception of this sonata. There is also a critical report discussing and evaluating all sources used and providing explanations of a number of important passages including the famous trill itself. The first movement El Butaquito is based on a very lively folk-song of the same name and is characterised by its many contrasting rhythms. The second movement Romance Mejicano creates a peaceful and romantic atmosphere. The title of the third movement Ballaviejo means ‘Antique Dance’ in which the word antique refers to the rhythms that were taken to America by Africa’s black population. La Charreada the final movement depicts the popular Mexican Rodeo where the action in the arena is usually supported by instrumental ensembles the so-called ‘Mariacchi’.

During his short lifetime Max Reger (1873-1916) was a prolific composer with many of his best known works being composed for organ. The ten chorale preludes in this selection are from his set of Thirty Short Chorale Preludes Op.135a composed as short voluntaries for liturgical use rather than for recitals in these arrangements Philip Sparke has kept this in mind and each prelude can be performed with minimal instrumentation for those occasions where a small band is needed. They also make great pieces for band warm-ups or studies in intonation sound and balance.

Edward MacDowell can be regarded as the first great American composer although he disliked the idea of being classified as any sort of musical nationalist. He composed a large number of orchestral works but it is the charming and unpretentious suite of musical miniatures Woodland Sketches that has survived as his best-known work with To a Wild Rose being the most popular. Philip Sparke has expertly arranged this simple work for brass band.

Russell Robinson always finds a way to take a song and make it accessible for the younger voice and inexperienced ensemble. He continues with this arrangement of Take the 'A' Train. The singer learns the melody in the opening then is ready to take on the faster movement of the same melody throughout. A great jazz classic for choral groups.

Morning Song features the horn quartet mostly in a soloistic role - indeed there is an accompanied cadenza towards the end of the piece - but there are moments where the horns assume their conventional fanfare band role as harmonic support or playing the counter melody. This expressive composition shows all the versatility of the horn quartet and gives them the chance to be in the spotlight.
