Solo features with a live big band-For many musicians playing in a big band is an ultimate high point. The special line-up of the big band guarantees amazing tuttis but equally allows the opportunity to perform quiet ballads. Playing in the wind section of a big band is an experience you will not forget in a hurry. Unfortunately playing a solo - as the word suggests - is reserved for only a few. However with this book you can be the centre of attention as you get the opportunity to play the leading part in these swinging pieces. On the enclosed CD you will hear fantastic solos which give you a good idea of the how it should be done. Of course you do not have to copy the solo you can also improvise to thewritten chords. Four Swinging Clarinet Quartets-This unique series allows you to form a jazz quartet with three players playing either the same instrument or playing any combination of flute clarinet alto saxophone or trumpet. The CD contains accompaniments from a tight jazz backing band which makes playing in a swing style easy.

The magnificent concert march Aurum (lat. gold) was written on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the cunductor of the municipal band of Wolfach in Baden-Württemberg Germany. The march begins with a light and playful theme. Thefollowing lyrical trio provides a contrast with its nod to Edward Elgar. After a number of key changes the introductory theme returns in canon. Finally the music heads to a majestic finale in which the trio theme is played as a splendid baroquechorale.

De los Zapatos Rotos-‘El batallón de los zapatos rotos’ literally means ‘the regiment of the wornout shoes’. This composition is a sort of hybrid between the typically Spanish paso doble and a Belgian hunters’ march. The title is a metaphor for fighting for a just cause even without the necessary means. An original variation on the standard paso doble!

Since the Treaty of Lisbon came into force at the end of 2009 a lot has happened within the European Union. There were (and are) sceptics as well as ardent supporters. In the meantime however something like a ‘European identity’ has arisen radiating optimism and vitality. Europe’s Glory gives voice to the positive message of solidarity and joined forces.

This piece was written for two sons of the composer as a welcome to young and innocent lives in to this big world. The concept and instrumentation of the composition allows any young band to play this piece. The optional celesta (keyboard) is a refreshing addition evoking the sound of an ancient music box and has a meaningful part as the music box fades out at the end of the piece.

The work was commissioned by the UK choir Ex Cathedra for its 40th anniversary which fell in the same year (1969) as the 40th anniversary of the Moon landing. It was written for 40-part choir on the model of Thomas Tallis's famous Spem in alium. Minuit Chrétiens - O Holy Night-The French composer Adolphe Charles Adam's (1803- 1856) carol Cantique de NoÏl (better known in France as Minuit Chrétiens and also widely known as O Holy Night) was initially criticised by church authorities who observed a lack of musical taste and the absence of religious perception. How wrong they were is now clear as the song is popular worldwide and is often performed in churches as well as carol concerts. Roland Kernen has produced this beautiful version of Cantique de Noël for brass band.

for Alto Saxophone and Concert Band-Dance of Uzume is a concertino that is based on a Japanese myth: out of anger toward her brother Susanowa the storm god the sun goddess Amaterasu hides in a cave. The goddess of joy Uzume succeeds in luring the sun goddess out of the cave by dancing wildly. The joy and laughter of the other gods as they watch Uzume arouses Amaterasu’s curiosity and with her appearance the light on earth returns. This fantastic new original work will make a much needed addition to the advanced repertoire for saxophone and concert band. A version for saxophone and piano is also available.
