Tuba & Piano-When writing his tuba concerto Philip Sparke wanted to create a work which explored the many aspects of the instrument’s technical and vocal qualities but without resorting to caricature. The result is a concerto in two joined movements which can both be programmed individually that contains both many lyrical lines together with stunning virtuosic passages. An outstanding concerto that tuba players and brass band audiences alike will enjoy and applaud.

Folk music plays an important role in the life of the Ukrainian people. Their country covers an area of over 600.000 square kilometres and has more than fifty million inhabitants. In the north there are vast woods in the west one finds the picturesque Carpatian mountains and valleys and in the centre and the south Ukraine has its famous steppes with fertile black soil. The river Dnjepr divides the country in two forming a natural frontier between the western and eastern regions which each have their own distinctively different musical folklore. This diversity forms the musical basis for Ukrainian Rhapsody. The work consists of three movements: the first one in a moderatetempo without a pause flows into a slow but very expressive middle movement resulting in a powerful climax. The composition ends with the Gopak: a rousing dance.

Following studies at the University of Cambridge he studied music in Leipzig and Berlin before returning to England where he was one of the founding professors of the Royal College of Music in London. He taught composition there until the end of his life.

Dating from the first decades of the 20th century and originating in vaudeville and the music hall the soft-shoe shuffle was danced by tap dancers wearing soft-shoes instead of their normal tap shoes. In this usually comic dance the shoes were rubbed on the surface of the stage producing a characteristic ‘swish’. Soft-shoe Shuffle can be made into a percussion feature by bringing the sandpaper blocks to the front of the stage - with added choreography if required! A wonderful piece of musical humour for your concerts.

(The Four Seasons)-Antonio Vivaldi (1678-1741) stands with Handel and J.S. Bach as one of the titanic figures of late Baroque composition. Not only was he lauded as a composer of vocal and instrumental works both sacred and secular he was without serious competition the most prolific composer of his age. In addition to hundreds of vocal works includingforty-nine operas he composed five hundred concertos. The Four Seasons are probably the best known of his concerti with the second movement

The history of rock and roll can be traced back as far as the musical influence of the first African slaves to arrive in North America. The style borrows heavily from rhythm and blues and early rock stars such as Ike Turner Bill Haley Chuck Berry Buddy Holly and Elvis Presley had a huge influence through the newly-invented juke box and liberated the youth of the day by giving them a music of their own. What if famous Baroque composer Johann Sebastian Bach was born in the 20th Century or beyond? You might probably never hear J. S. Bach the same way again. Bach to the Beat! is an upbeat arrangement comprised of a selection of eight well-known tunes by J. S. Bach all carefully constructed and put together in just over three and a half minutes - with apologies to Bach. This “Ba-rock”-styled work will definitely be a great addition to any band concert program!

The Allschwil music school in Switzerland commissioned this composition to appeal to young people and awaken in them an enthusiasm for music. Sven Van Calster who is known for his graceful melodies and for his colourful - and also varied - instrumentation has fulfilled this commission with bravura. Truly a musical experience!

Christmas is a time for making music especially in ensembles. This edition with its very easy arrangements for two violins viola and cello is ideal for beginner string players to get into the Christmas spirit. The 27 pieces are based either on works of Baroque composers such as Lully or Handel or on traditional mostly German Christmas carols. One of the pieces requires an additional violin another a viola.
