Thomas Tertius Noble (1867-1953) was a British organist composer and choirmaster who spent the latter part of his career in the United States. He studied at the Royal College of Music before serving at Ely and the York as organist and choirmaster. In 1913 he took up a position at St Thomas Episcopal Church in Manhattan New York where he remained for thirty years and is credited with establishing a choir school in the Anglican tradition that continues to this day. His second setting of the evening canticles the Magnificat and Nunc Dimittis is in the key of A major. It is scored for SATB chorus with Piano or Organ accompaniment.

Its title Hail the Dragon! references a work Philip Sparke wrote in 1984 The Year of the Dragon. The piece opens with a lively and energetic fanfare. The mood becomes more subdued in the centre section as the cornet introduces a new theme that builds to an emotional climax. This leads into a recap of the opening fanfare which acts as a type of descant to short quotations from the last movement of The Year of the Dragon before reaching a thunderous finale.

Johan de Meij’s first symphony The Lord of the Rings is based on the trilogy of that name by J.R.R. Tolkien. This book has fascinated many millions of readers since its publication in 1955. The symphony consists of five separate movements each illustrating a personage or an important episode from the book. The fifth movement expresses the carefree and optimistic character of the Hobbits in a happy folk dance; the hymn that follows emanates the determination and noblesse of the hobbit folk. The symphony does not end on an exuberant note but is concluded peacefully and resigned in keeping with the symbolic mood of the last chapter “The Grey Havens” in which Frodo andGandalf sail away in a white ship and disappear slowly beyond the horizon. This easy concert march can be divided into two parts. The first part which is rhythmical beautifully contrasts with the second part which is lyrical. Each section of the band has its turn in this concertmarch which in spite of its easy level of difficulty deserves the designation “five-star piece.”

In composing Puszta Jan Van der Roost wrote folk dances related to Slavonic folk music. Its character and sounds are comparable to the Hungarian and Slavonic dances by Brahms and Dvorak and to the Hungarian Rhapsodies by Liszt. All the melodies however are newly composed not adapted from existing dances.

This piece was composed in 1998 by John Adams. It is an expressive and brilliant work for Two Pianos and Four hands that is energetic and resonant.

After Schubert’s death in 1828 his brother Ferdinand passed on thirteen songs based on texts by Ludwig Rellstab and Heinrich Heine to the publisher Haslinger. Schubert had only composed them shortly before his death in August 1828. During his lifetime Schubert actually wanted to publish the two groups of Lieder separately. However the Heine and Rellstab songs are indeed closely related. Haslinger added a fourteenth Lied “Die Taubenpost” based on a text by Johann Gabriel Seidl which Schubert had composed at the same time as “Der Hirt auf dem Felsen” (D 965) one month before his death but which in no way bears any relation to the Rellstab and Heine Lieder. Thiscollection was published posthumously by Haslinger early in May 1829 and it was named Schwanengesang – traditionally the term given to an artist’s last work before his death. This collection is here presented in an authoritative Barenreiter Urtext Edition for Medium Voice.
