Bach's setting of this text is simple and concise. The scoring is light - apart from Strings and continuo it calls only for an Oboist and three Vocal soloists and a Chorus in the closing chorale. Concertino for Euphonium and Concert Band- Bliss is one of the most spectacular euphonium solos around. It was commissioned by the euphonium virtuoso Steven Mead. Cantata for the 4th Sunday of Advent- The cantata Bereitet die Wege is one of the few works by Johann Sebastian Bach of which we know fairly well how it came into being. The autograph full score bears the date 1715; Bach therefore composed the piece for the church service given by the Weimar court orchestra (of which he was the concert master) on 22 December the fourth Sunday in Advent in the year 1715. We even know the author of the words: it was the High Ecclesiastical Secretary in Weimar Salomon Franck who wrote the poem especially for that occasion and had it printed in his annual cycle of cantata texts entitled Evangelisches Andachtsopfer.

from the Opera The Night before Christmas-Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov (1844-1908) composed his opera The Night before Christmas in 1894-95. The premiere took place on December 10 1895 in St. Petersburg. The libretto to the opera came from Rimsky-Korsakov himself and is based on a tale by Nikolai Gogol which some years earlier had already served as operatic material for Pjotr Tchaikovsky. The opera tells the story of Vakula the blacksmith of a small Ukranian village. He is madly in love with Oxana who demands - as proof of his love - a most unusual Christmas present: the magnificent slippers of the Empress. Knowing full well that in normal circumstances he would never be able to fulfil Oxana’s wish Vakula seekssupernatural assistance and finds it in the shape of the devil who comes up with a ploy to help him. The devil carries him on his back to St. Petersburg where during a lavish reception at court Vakula finds an opportunity to present his request to the empress. The Empress actually agrees to Vakula’s wish and hands over her slippers to him. Thereupon he returns to his own village. Here in the meantime he had been given up for dead and Oxana had been plunged into great sorrow as she had come to realise that she also truly loved Vakula. In the end however all misunderstandings are resolved and all adversities overcome: Oxana receives her extravagant present the lovers are united and the church bells call the villagers to the Christmas service.The vibrant Polonaise is played in the 3rd act of the opera at the entrance of the Empress whose appearance is anticipated in the prelude by the fanfare motives. The music paints a vivid picture of the party atmosphere and the marvellous décor at the imperial court of St. Petersburg which Rimsky-Korsakov conjures up in his opera and which can also be played outside of the Advent and Christmas season for example as an opening piece to any festive concert.

for Solo Bb Euphonium and Brass Band- For a Flower is a very melodic and virtuosic solo work for euphonium and brass band. It opens with a gentle solo introduction on euphonium which develops into a grand hymnal theme. Following this comes a faster and more virtuosic section in a traditional Irish style with a varied dialogue between the band and the soloist. The work closes triumphantly with the hymnal theme of the opening. For a Flower showcases both the musical and technical capabilities of this wonderful instrument. The euphonium soloist must naturally master both skills: lyrical playing and virtuoso playing. For a Flower was commissioned by the Dutch euphonium virtuoso Robbert Vosand is dedicated to his wife Evi.

Jesu bleibet meine Freude from Cantata 147-Bach’s appointment as the Cantor at Leipzig’s Thomaskirche in 1723 required him to produce a new cantata for every Sunday service. Jesu Joy of Man’s Desiring is taken from his Cantata No.147 and is unusually elaborate treated more like an aria than a chorale. It is perhaps the best-loved cantata movement from Bach’s entire output and is a certain crowd pleaser for your concert programme.

Czardas is a piece for 14 Saxophones(Sopranino SSSAAAATTTBarBarB) by Vittorio Monti . This composition arranged by Armando Ghidoni lasts 5'30 minutes and has a name taken from a Hungarian National Dance. Divided into six distinctive parts this piece is really cheerful and energetic. It requires some really strong technique as some sections are really fast. - Lento cadenza a piacere / Largo Maestoso - Vivace - Lento Maestoso - Vivace - Piu Mosso - Presto Czardas is the most famous piece by Vittorio Monti which was also arranged for otherinstruments: Violin and Guitar String quartet and accordion among others. It is a really entertaining work to play that will definitely be enjoyed by the audience during a recital. Vittorio Monti is an Italian composer mandolinist and violinist who worked in many gypsy orchestras.
