This piece tells the story of a conflict between the communities in the valleys around Sörenberg a village in Entlebuch in the Swiss canton of Lucerne. An old legend from the 14th century tells of an attack on Sörenberg by marauding Obwaldners who stole the local cattle. It’s full of spectacular effects and impressive rhythmical and dynamic sequences. Ideal as a contest piece.

Viola- Dvorák’s Violin Concerto was composed between 1879 and 1882 with the active assistance of Joseph Joachim and was issued by the publisher Fritz Simrock Berlin in 1883. Its premiere took place in October of that same year with František Ondrícek as soloist. This new Urtext edition is based on the first edition (score solo Violin part Piano reduction and orchestral parts). It also takes Dvorák’s autograph which served as a master copy for the engraving into consideration. A fresh assessment of Dvorák’s manuscript made it possible to reconstruct several variants ignored in the first and subsequent editions and toclarify ambiguities in the notation and articulation. An important component of our Urtext edition is the original Piano reduction which probably stems from Dvorák himself and in which Joseph Joachim’s fingering is published. Juri Briat has arranged the tunes of the winter Olympic games of the Eighties for a wind orchestra. As always he has chosen original works and arranged them in his own typically colourful way. An ideal opening number for your concert with allure.

The original concept for this work was a suite of short movements each with its own character but by the time the first movement was complete it was clear that a conventional three-movement format was going to work out better. The opening movement contains much syncopation and is almost rag-like in style. The slower second movement explores the unsurpassable ability of the euphonium to play lyrically with a theme that is later taken up by the band whilst the soloist weaves a filigree descant. This leads straight into the third movement which is almost bebop in style and shows off the jazzier capabilities of the euphonium. The concerto was composed for the virtuoso soloist Steven Mead. A version for euphonium and piano is also available.

Fanfare and Jubilation was commissioned by the Yahata Technical High School Band (Fukuoka Japan) to celebrate the 40th edition of their annual concert and is dedicated to its directors Mr. Satoru Yoshihara and Ms. Akane Morimoto. The premiere took place on June 14 2007 in Kitakyushu City Fukuoka Japan with Mr. Satoru Yoshihara conducting.The piece is comprised of two parts: a festive opening fanfare; and a scintillating melody that reflects the celebratory atmosphere. Its melodic character uplifting mood and punchy wit make Fanfare and Jubilation equally suitable as an opening piece or a concert work.

Born in Toulouse Marcel Bitsch (1921-2011) went on to study at the Paris Conservatoire before becoming a professor of counterpoint at the institution. As an exceptionally versatile composer Bitsch has composed orchestral works chamber works and numerous pieces and studies for wind instruments. Le Banquet Celeste by Olivier Messiaen is one of his earliest compositions. Written for Organ this piece lasts 7 minutes because of its slow tempo that gives it a timeless feeling. This piece is quite challenging and would require an advanced technical level. Written in Octatonic mode Le Banquet Celeste used a theme that was transposed twice for less monotony Olivier Messiaen (1908-1992) was a French organist and composer passionate about Ornithology and one of the most important composer of his century. Inspired by Japanese music he had a very special way of composing andhis work can be identified by its complexity its diatonic aspect its harmony with limited transposition its colour and its additive rhythms. He composed many works related to ornithology and birdsong including the 'Bird Catalogue' in 7 volumes and the 'Treatise on rhythm colour and ornithology' in 7 volumes.

Volume 3- Olivier Messiaen (1908-1992) is known for his unique composition style. Incorporating complex rhythms harmony melodies and his passion for ornithology his Catalogue D'Oiseaux for Piano is no exception to the composer's popular distinctive style. Messiaen became fascinated by birdsong from an early age however it wasn't until the 1950s that he took his passion to a new level incorporating birdsong into all of his compositions. Catalogue D'Oiseaux composed in 1958 comprises thirteen movements each depicting a specific bird. The third volume contains movements five and six; Tawny Owl and Woodlark. Catalogue D'Oiseaux is essential to all advanced pianists seeking to expand and vary their repertoire.

The Battell was written during the late 14th Century when England was in a mood of national celebration after victory over the Spanish and French Armadas.The movement which Byrd called Marche Before The Battell became known as The Earl of Oxford?s Marchand it appears with that title in an early manuscript copy of the Fitzwilliam Virginal Book.Written while Byrd was at the height of his powers it still stirs the soul to this day. A perfect opener for your concert performances.
