G minor BWV 1058- In early 1729 Bach became director of the so-called »Scottish Collegium Musician« a music organization of students and local citizens. The remarkable results of this undertaking are the concertos for harpsichord. Today it is almost certain that practically all of these concertos were transcribed from concertos for melody instruments (mostly violin or oboe). The Concerto for Harpsichord and Strings in G minor BWV 1058 is the last complete work in the original autograph score of harpsichord concertos that Bach wrote out in or around 1738 (Berlin Staatsbibliothek Mus. Ms. Bach 234). However it only came to occupy this position later when the manuscript wasbound. It stands at the very outset of the genesis of this group of works and marks the earliest stage in Bach's efforts to transform concertos for melody instrument and strings into harpsichord concertos. Bellum et Pax is a composition describing the two ancient concepts of ‘war’ and ‘peace.’ While this piece appears to be one single movement it consists of four sections that flow into one another. Mysterious and threatening tones lead the way into an epic battle between the chaos of war and enlightenment of peace. Peace triumphs but menacing bass notes at the end symbolize the constant presence and threat of war and violence in the world.

Bach ’s Christmas Oratorio composed in 1734 narrates the story of the birth of Jesus in a cycle of six cantatas with a text probably by Christian Friedrich Henrici (known as Picander) who provided several libretti for Bach during his Leipzig period. Like the St. Matthew and St. John Passions the Christmas Oratorio is narrated by an Evangelist and includes devices from Italian opera such as the recitative and aria. In writing this piece Gino Bergamini was inspired by the figure of Davy Crockett hunter and pioneer in the colonisation of the western part of North America. The piece is built entirely on the smooth succession of intriguing themes and characterised by sharp rhythms. The themes after a short elaboration with an expressive and meaningful style return in a finale with rich sonority to recreate the fascinating atmosphere of that mythical hero Davy Crockett.

Sinfonia dall' opera- Tancredi composed in 1813 is rarely performed in today’s opera houses however its overture or Sinfonia as it was called at the time is well-liked and has received regular performances over the years. This arrangement for concert band has been written so as to retain the original spirit of this immortal short composition one of Rossini’s favourites.

The Missa in F of 1734 for two or four choirs is probably Pergolesi's most important work for choir and orchestra. The nickname Missa Romana was added later in reference to a performance given in Rome during Pergolesi's lifetime.
