for Violin and Orchestra-Beethoven’s 'Romances' are performed all over the world yet how many conductors performers and listeners are aware that op. 50 which was incidentally composed before op. 40 comes down to us in an unfinished form? The autograph score contains little to no articulation or dynamics and to the present day the work has existed only in highly over-edited publications. The performer has no way of knowing what was originally intended by the composer. Bärenreiter’s new Urtext edition of opp. 50 and 40 offers the score to op. 50 twice; the first score reflects the state of Beethoven’s autograph with editorial markings clearly indicated the second score has beenedited based on other works by Beethoven from that period. Great Credo Mass- The Missa K.257 bears the non-authentic dating 1776 and was presumably composed at the end of 1776 or in the first half of 1777. Like K.262 (246a) it is designated in Leopold Mozart’s handwriting as a Missa longa on the cover page of an early composite manuscript containing the five masses in C major. K.257 is listed there as the last work. The designation “Missa longa” was intended to point out that this was an extensive full-scale mass. Normally it would have been called a Missa solemnis but Mozart for unknown reasons did not make use of this customary nomenclature. The name “Credo Mass” is taken from the acclamations of “Credo” that constantly interrupt thelike-named movement. The Mass is remarkable for its density of invention within the narrowest of confines. Further its instrumental accompaniment has an almost chamber-music quality that emerges time and again into almost symphonic proportions. Version For Solo Cello and Tape- Cello Counterpoint is scored for eight Cellos and can be played by a soloist with the other parts pre-recorded (This tape is available from the Boosey & Hawkes rental library.) Alternatively the piece can be played by a Cello Octet. (There are differences in the distribution of parts between the two versions.) The piece is in three movements: fast slow fast. The first and last movements are both based on a similar four-chord cycle that moves ambiguously back and forth between C minor and E-flat major. This harmonic cycle is treated extremely freely particularly in the third movement. The second slow movement is a canon in E-flat minorinvolving near the end of the movement seven separate voices. The piece is a little more than 11 minutes in duration and was co-commissioned by the Koussevitzky Foundation in the Library of Congress the Royal Conservatory in The Hague and Leiden University for Cellist Maya Beiser.

Triple Concerto- In Beethoven ’s Triple Concerto a Piano trio provides the soloists – a first in the history of music. Beethoven ’s treatment of the trio is pioneering: he does not apply a typical Piano trio setting in contrast to the orchestra but varies his treatment of the solo parts allowing each instrument to play alone with the Orchestra (particularly the Cello) using two solo instruments together in ever new combinations and finally bringing together all three instruments with the Orchestra. Beethoven weaves a complex web – the orchestral Piano Violin and Cello voices interplaying and entwining – and he produces a truemasterpiece. Bärenreiter’s new Urtext edition of Beethoven ’s Triple Concerto is a completely fresh revision of this warm and beautiful showpiece. Errors abounded in all previous editions but with the assistance of three newly-discovered sources editor Jonathan Del Mar has cleaned up the text corrected wrong notes and rhythms and (for the first time since 1807) presented the work in a way that a musician of Beethoven ’s day might have recognized with all necessary information for directing the piece included in the solo Piano part.
